10 Questions with... Tony Kerr


Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Tony Kerr, European Sales and Marketing Director at Xeros.

What was your first job? My first job was in the


family hotel business working in the laundry. I stayed there until I was 23. My first experience in sales was Encyclopaedia Britannia.


How did you get into the cleaning industry?


As you can see from my background in my family business, I’m laundry through and through. I’ve always been interested in sales as I have an innate ability to listen and to empathise with people.

Which three words describe your personality?


Focused, driven, optimistic.


If you could visit one place in the world, where would you


go and why?


I would love to go to Australia – its scenery and landscapes are just beautiful.


How would you improve the cleaning industry?


Increased collaboration and best practice sharing across the industry.


If an intern were to start tomorrow, what’s the one


piece of advice you would give them? You have two ears and one mouth, use them in the proportion they were given to you.


What do you do to unwind? Music and watching Gaelic

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could


only have one thing, what would it


be and why? A couple of books to pass the time away, plus you can use them to light a fire later on. The Bible would be included in the list of books to read, but would not be used to light fires!


What, do you think, is the future of the cleaning industry?


Xeros, obviously! Xeros delivers a revolutionary and proven commercial laundering system for customers such as dry cleaners, hotels, spas, gyms and other organisations which wash large quantities of garments on-site.


Xeros machines involve water being largely replaced by unique, fully reusable and recyclable nylon polymer beads. It is the first genuine innovation in laundering for more than 60 years and our machines are proven to use up to 80% less water than traditional commercial washing machines. Comparing a typical 23kg machine, a saving of 1.5m litres of water can be achieved when using a Xeros laundry process. On top of that, they demand only half as much energy – thanks to their gentler cleaning action, lower wash temperatures – and 50% less detergent being used.


Laundering the traditional way can raise issues with the quality of such items as they have to be laundered frequently and tend to become frayed and thin all too quickly. The


use of beads enables washing to be done at a lower temperature (from the standard 90º to 40º) and less detergent is required. As a result, the cleaning action is less abrasive but the beads’ ability to tackle stains ensures superior cleanliness is achieved and towels and robes stay looking and feeling newer for longer.

‘What impact will innovation have on the


cleaning industry in 2015?’ Innovation will have huge impact on the industry, customers want longer life linen, superior cleaning and to save money whilst being kinder to the environment. By focusing on innovative green technologies that can deliver this, customers can meet their objectives and sleep well knowing that they have done their bit.
