A New Entry To The Hand Drying Debate


A new “germ destroying” hand dryer is set to transform the education, healthcare and food processing sectors with the introduction of Cold Plasma Clean (cPc) technology – which has been proven to actively kill germs including e.coli, staph, C.diff, MRSA and Salmonella with a 99.6% success rate – without the use of chemicals.


American Dryer’s (UK’s) cPc technology – which has never before been used in this context or been available in European markets – will be debuted in its high-speed eXtremeAir cPc model. This is now available throughout the UK and Europe from American Dryer’s official partner, American Dryer UK, a trading name of Intelligent Sourcing Systems Ltd.


The eXtremeAir cPc technology features a revolutionary generator that converts air into cold plasma through a bipolar ionisation process. The generator inside the dryer uses steady state positive and negative discharge points to split water molecules in the air into oppositely charged hydrogen and oxygen ions. These ions, otherwise known as hydroxyl radicals, in turn clean the air without chemicals.


Following years of research and development, American Dryer’s patented cPc technology was launched in the US in November 2013, and has been rigorously tested by two of the world’s leading independent microbiology labs.


With kill rates against the majority of common germs as high as 99.6%, cPc technology goes beyond HEPA filtration, which simply traps mold and germs inside the dryer. According to American Dryer, the eXtremeAir cPc is the only hand dryer that has been tested on vitro skin and shown to radically reduce harmful bacteria within a realistic drying period.

The introduction of this scientifically proven, hygienic technology could end the recent speculation over the paper towels versus hand dryer debate, and transform the hygiene levels in large public buildings like airports, schools, hospitals, restaurants and food service organisations.

Despite never being applied to the hand drying sector before, proven cold plasma technology has been used to successfully purify the air in commercial buildings since the 1930s. Man-made plasma can be generated at low temperatures by applying a voltage to a gas and more recently, cold plasma has been implemented in medical practice to treat surgical incisions and used in the food processing industry to kill bacteria.
