Stage 1: Pre-Project Learning and Preparation (1 week): Before students began the project, mini-lessons were given on environmental issues and their impacts (Figure 1). Students were then given the assignment to research various topics and then select one issue which most appealed to them. Once students had decided upon an issue of their choice, they were encouraged to group with other students who had picked the same or a similar topic in order to benefit from peer collabora- tion. Once in groups, students further researched their topics in order to answer the question, “How can I contribute to solv- ing this issue from within my school, family, or community?” Figure 1

Step one: Research the term “environmental issue”. Then, write the definition on the lined spaces IN YOUR OWN WORDS: ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________

Step two: Visit the United Nations home page for global issues here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_environmental_issues https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/top-25-environmental-concerns.php Read through the world issues listed on the left side of the screen. Create a list of 3 that you are interested in. 1.) ______________________________________________________ 2.) ______________________________________________________ 3.) ______________________________________________________

Step three: Briefly research each of the three world issues that you listed above. Then, narrow your 3 down to 1. This will be your topic for the remainder of the project. FINAL TOPIC: ___________________________________________________________________________________

Step four: {narrow your topic} Currently, your topic is very BROAD and you need to NARROW your topic in order to make it more specific. For example, if you selected “endangered species” as your category, you might want to narrow the topic specifically to “the causes and possible solutions to cheetah endangerment”.

NARROWED TOPIC: ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________

Step five: Have your teacher approve and initial this assignment sheet. ___________________________
