Teacher Learning in the Digital Age

This researched-packed book outlines the many reasons why more and more individuals are looking to learn online. Covering both the “whys” and the “hows,” Teacher Learning provides multiple exam- ples of different styles and types of online or digital learn- ing, allowing the reader or educator to dis- cover what type is best for their own individual learning style or the learning needs of their

students. Not meant to be read cover to cover, the book’s excellent orga- nizational scheme makes it easy for readers to pinpoint exactly where their weaknesses in online learning lie, and where to find book-based information to supplement their learning or creation of digital learning resources. — (JT)

Creative Place-Based Environmental Education

While place- based education is becoming a more com- mon practice in classrooms, there is still much to learn from the re- search, and this book clearly lays out the how and why. From hikes to

school gardens, numerous activities are described. The book also covers the positive impacts of place-based education as well as how to continually engage in best practices. For instance, by encouraging students to partake in processes of receptivity and participa- tion, teachers can help youths connect

with the world around them, thus building creativity, collaboration, and capacity. For educators looking to con- nect classroom learning to the wider community and world, this is a useful book providing principles that can be applied to students of all ages. — (RS)

Growing a Life

The book, subtitled Teen gardeners harvest food, health, and joy, is a must- read for anyone who wants affirmation that growing food may be one of the most important experiences we can of- fer the youth of today. Through a series of interviews, Illene Pevec includes the youth perspective in her hefty 400+ page work. In their own voices, students discuss everything from the beneficial impacts of gardening on their mental health, to feeling important and connected to their com- munities, to an increasing awareness of environmen- tal issues, to the sense of accomplish- ment they feel when they are able

to feed themselves and their families with what they have grown. Pevec has also carefully and thoroughly researched her material. She referenc- es peer-reviewed journal articles and interviews experts throughout. This would be an excellent reference for anyone looking to start up a school garden, and especially important were any naysayers to question the relevance of such a project. This book pro- vides the evidence, both imperial and experiential, to support the notion that getting teens involved in gardening has positive impacts that extend far beyond the production of healthy food. — (KZ)
