WMEA News WMEA Elections

The Northeast and South Central districts will be holding elections for a vice presi- dent to represent each area. Patty Schlafer (SC) and Matt McVeigh (NE) will be completing their second terms on June 30 and successors will be elected. In addition, there is also a WMEA president-elect election this year. All WMEA members will receive an electronic ballot for the president-elect position, and NE and SC members will receive ballots for the vice president positions. Please vote for your representatives when your email ballot arrives.

WMEA Membership Campaign

At the January WMEA Council meeting, WMEA Membership Chair Kati Seiter rolled out the membership campaign to reach out to non-member music educators from around the state. Board and council members will contact non-members they know personally or professionally and invite them to join the organization. All members of WMEA are encouraged to speak with their colleagues who are not members and invite them to join.

The membership application can be found at www.nafme.org/join. This page will connect you to National Association for Music Education of which WMEA is a state affiliate. Dues paid to NAfME include WMEA membership and the benefits of both organizations.

WMEA Awards

Before the end of the school year catches you by surprise, please give some seri- ous thought to the WMEA Awards, with particular attention to the Melvin F. Pon- tius Creative Sparks in Music Education Award. This award is given to music pro- grams from around that state that have a creative, innovative or imaginative aspect to them. This might be in the classroom, an extension of the classroom or a com- munity outreach project or relationship. The award application needs a YouTube video upload, making it a little different from the usual award application process. Self-nominations are encouraged. The deadline for this application is June 1.

Please go to wmeamusic.org/awards or wmeamusic.org/creativesparksaward to see information about this particular award or all of the awards given by WMEA.
