WMEA News Lynn Seidl, WMEA President-Elect
2016 Wisconsin State Music Conference
WMEA is in the planning stages for the 2016 Wisconsin State Music Conference. A very successful planning session day
was held on January 9, with the WMEA Board and Council and attending WMEA members discussing and prioritizing the sessions that they would like to include in this year’s conference. Sessions that were proposed were examined and in addition,
sessions were written for various areas in order to round out the needs of the at- tendees at the conference.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Wisconsin MusicStrong.” This theme was generated partially in response to the 2015 “Every Student Succeeds Act” (ESSA), which was passed by a bipartisan vote of 85-12 in the U.S. Senate on De- cember 9. It supports music education by listing music separately as a subject that a well-rounded student requires. Indeed, music stands alone from the previous wording of “and the arts” and now the legislation is in place to help it do so. Also, we are continually reminded of the fine work of Wisconsin music educators and the strength that is garnered when working cooperatively for the good of the students. Wisconsin is definitely MusicStrong!
The dates for this year’s conference will be October 26-29 in Madison. Mark your calendars now and plan on attending.
The afternoon after the planning session was reserved for a WMEA Board and Council meeting. Council chairs gave reports on their work since the previous meeting in July and the strategic plan was discussed.
