can lead, in corporations, to collaborative stagnation and a dearth of creative thought. In the public realm, it can lead to populist calls for short-term protectionist policies.
Some governments are facing up to this challenge at the national level—Singapore, for example, now offers a rolling $500 grant to every citizen over twenty-five years old to take part in vocational training. Companies such as AT&T in the US offer up to $8,000 a year to employees to retrain, providing a psychologically safe space for them to collaborate wholeheartedly on new projects, secure in the knowledge that should their role change as a result, they will be supported to change with the organisation. Doing this might feel risky for companies (or governments) in an age of austerity— but, as Henry Ford observed:
“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay.”
