From Misplaced Confi dence to Appreciation


Many of us secretly suspect that confidence must really mean arrogance and under-confidence humility. But in reality, whether we are over- or under-confident depends on how realistically aware we are of our actual abilities in a particular field.


We might imagine that overconfi dence is only a problem for a small group of narcissists, but in reality many of us have an inbuilt overconfidence in certain areas of our working life that can be crippling to collaborative success. It’s a statistical oxymoron that nearly all of us believe we’re more competent than the average person in most areas—whether that’s in client management, strategic analysis, or creative thinking. On average, we all tend to overestimate our abilities. Studies show that when confronted by our own biases, we tend to think we are less biased than others. In other words, almost all of us also have an inbuilt “bias bias”. Our resulting feelings of superiority can make collaborating
