Good collaboration is not of course just the responsi- bility of individuals. As the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle pointed out, it is hard to be virtuous unless the institutions we engage with are also virtuous. A nurse may be highly compassionate, but he will struggle to show that compassion to his patients if the hospital where he works has reduced the number of nurses, leaving him stressed and overstretched.
Organisations must also contribute to the collabora- tive success of their teams by creating cultures and practices that make it easier for individuals to practise the collaborative virtues needed. Helpful insight on collaborative success will, therefore, identify steps that can be taken by individuals, teams and organisations to cultivate the virtues of collaboration.
