Accelerating Safe Concentration of Accelerated Solvent Extraction Samples
Genevac has announced the Puck - a new sampling accessory that extends the sampling versatility of its Rocket™ Evaporator to simultaneously accommodate up to eighteen 60ml Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE®
) tubes.
For environmental, food and agricultural scientists that commonly employ solvent extraction techniques - concentration of extracted samples prior to analysis has traditionally been a time consuming manual process involving exposure to organic solvents.
Benefiting from a new patented low temperature,
low pressure steam heating technology developed by Genevac - the ASE Compatible Rocket Evaporator is able to uniquely achieve the dual goals of very fast evaporation with very precise
temperature control thereby accelerating the safe concentration of extraction samples. Evaporation of ASE tubes is fast, safe and provides excellent recoveries of even the most volatile analytes. In addition Genevac's patented Dri-Pure®
technology prevents solvent bumping and cross contamination inherent with rotary evaporator and other vacuum evaporation systems.
Offering true unattended operation capability the Rocket Evaporator requires no training - even a beginner can competently use the system in less than five minutes. A 2-stage cold trap built into the Rocket Evaporator provides very high levels of solvent recovery, even with volatile organic solvents. Requiring no peripherals for operation the compact Rocket Evaporator fits neatly onto a laboratory bench or into a fume hood. All key components on the robust and reliable system are user serviceable ensuring a low the cost of ownership.

Bottle Sampler Gives Clear Results for Laboratory Services Provider
The latest particle counting technology from Parker Hannifin is being used by Petrolab, one of Indonesia’s leading laboratory services providers, to test engine oil, hydraulic oil, and kerosene samples quickly and accurately on site. The Parker iCountBS (Bottle Sampler) is enabling Petrolab to improve its quality of service and cut costs, by eliminating the need to send samples away to be analysed.
Petrolab, based in Balikpapan, Indonesia, provides laboratory testing services and consultancy to clients in the mining and refinery industries among others. The information provided by Petrolab plays a vital role in its clients’ preventative maintenance strategies, making them aware of the contamination levels present in their industrial fluids and alerting them to problems before equipment performance is affected or failures occur.
Before using Parker’s particle counting technology, the Petrolab laboratory had to send samples away to be tested for contamination. This reliance on external suppliers was time consuming, costly, and resulted in a lack of control over Petrolab’s processes. To solve these issues, the company approached Parker for a solution that would allow it to analyse samples on site.
Parker suggested Petrolab try its innovative iCount BS bottle sampler, which incorporates proven on-board laser-based technology developed from in-the-field systems. The iCountBS would allow Petrolab to analyse 10ml and larger sample bottles in as little as 15 seconds. With repeatable and reproducible results in line with international standards, Petrolab could also be sure of the accuracy of its on-site testing.
Parker visited the laboratory to demonstrate to Petrolab how simple the iCountBS was to use. The laboratory technicians were quickly using the portable system’s touch screen control panel with ease, and printing results using the internal thermal printer. The company purchased the iCountBS and is now using it to test samples on a daily basis.

Cation-Exchange Resin to Neutralise Samples The ASE®
undergone pretreatment for base hydrolysis.
Many samples require pretreatment with acids or bases to improve the solubility of analytes or release them from the sample matrix. For example, with food samples, acid or base hydrolysis is used to hydrolyse lipids to free fatty acids to facilitate their extraction with organic solvents. For dairy products, base hydrolysis is usually preferred over acid hydrolysis.
This product is designed for use with the new Dionex ASE 150 and 350 systems (which include pH-hardened pathways with Dionium™ components) for the determination of lipids from food after base hydrolysis. The ASE Prep CR H+ form can also be used in other applications where strong base pretreatment has occurred.

Millipore Corporation announced the introduction of the redesigned Millex®
13mm sample preparation syringe filter. The
filter, which is used in tens of thousands of laboratories worldwide to prepare samples for critical techniques, including HPLC, UHPLC, and LC-MS, has been redesigned to provide greater speed and recovery than conventional syringe filters of the same size.
Accelerated Sample Concentration The Techne®
Sample Concentrator, used with one of the company’s Dri-Block® heaters,
provides fast solvent or diluent evaporation with no sample loss. The height-adjustable head of the Concentrator delivers a flow of inert gas, which removes evaporated solvent from the surface of solutions in tubes or 96-well plates.
Traditional methods of reducing the volume of solvent or diluent can take many hours, requiring the use of centrifugation, vacuum, heat and expensive cold traps, while also causing sample loss. By combining heat from below with a flow of inert gas to the liquid surface, the Techne®
Sample Concentrator and Dri-Block® heater have been shown to provide fast, easy solvent evaporation with no loss of sample quality or quantity.
The Concentrator features a unique patented gas chamber mounted on a fully adjustable stand for accurate height control. Inert gas, usually nitrogen, is directed onto the sample surface via a set of high quality stainless steel needles positioned in a silicon matrix according to the required spacing. Any sample format can be accommodated as the Concentrator is available in two models: one for 0.2ml micro centrifuge tubes, test tubes, boiling tubes, cuvettes and other small containers, and one for 96-well plates and deep well storage plates.
According to Chris O’Connor, CEO, Bibby Scientific: “The Techne® plus DB-3 Dri-Block® Sample Concentrator heater provides a highly versatile set-up which can be used with any sample format, inside or outside a fume
hood. Two areas which will particularly benefit are combinatorial chemistry where users can concentrate compounds directly in standard 96-well storage plates, and microarrays which require a high sample concentration of RNA, DNA or protein.”
The Techne® Sample Concentrator is supplied with a three-year warranty and can be used with either a nitrogen generator or gas
cylinder. The lightweight, compact unit can easily be placed in a fume cupboard when toxic solvents are being evaporated, and PTFE-coated needles are available for use with corrosive chemicals.

Increasing filtration speed also increases pressure on the filter housing. The new 13mm filter utilises a novel, Millipore-patented housing design that withstands higher operating pressures than conventional 13mm filters (up to 150 psig), and, therefore, allows for faster filtration.
In addition, the new device is low in extractables that can be detected by sensitive analytical instruments. It also has 50% less sample hold-up volume, so more sample is recovered after filtration.
“Device manufacturing cleanliness is especially important given the increasing sensitivity of today’s analytical instruments,” said Rebecca Duguid, Analytical Sample Preparation Product Manager. “The new 13mm Millex syringe filter is manufactured in a clean room to pharmaceutical standards with fully automated equipment and 100% visual and physical inspection.”
The new 13mm Millex syringe filter can be used to prepare from 1 to 10mL of sample. It is available in two pore sizes and four membrane materials: polyethersulfone (PES), poly - tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), nylon, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The housing is colour-coded by membrane type for easy identification. The device is compatible with a wide range of solvents and other chemicals, which makes it well suited for all analytical applications and sample types.
