9 Low Cost Disposable Reagent Reservoirs

Porvair Sciences Ltd has announced a new range of low cost, disposable polystyrene reagent reservoirs.

Optional lids help prevent reagent contamination and spillage as well as enabling reservoirs to be simply stacked economising on use of valuable bench space.

Available in a choice of different sizes (25-50ml or 50-100ml) and formats (8 or 12 channels) there is a disposable reagent reservoir to suit most applications. Sterile and non-sterile disposable reservoirs are supplied in packs of 100. Bulk packs of 200 are available for busy labs and larger institutions to reduce unit costs even further.

The unique non-nested design of Porvair’s disposable reagent reservoir makes it easy to separate a single reservoir from a pile. Accurate pipetting is enhanced by a ridge on the side of each reservoir that allows users to remove drops from pipette tips.

Air Disinfector Helps Fight Viral Disease

The infection prevention and control programme at Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust is showing excellent progress this year and technology company Inov8 Science is delighted that some of this success is being attributed to the AD (Air Disinfection) unit.

Emulating the natural disinfection properties of the open air (The Open Air Factor) the AD emits a constant low-level stream of hydroxyl radicals that attack airborne bacteria and viruses.

Measuring less than 41 x 20cm, the AD is a small device that is generally fixed to a wall in locations with the greatest potential for pathogen proliferation. So, for example, at Hereford units were initially placed throughout the older Nightingale style wards where there had been particular problems with outbreaks and ward closures. Subsequently units have been placed in all wards in the main hospital except for the children’s and women’s health wards.

Reporting excellent progress, Hereford Hospital NHS Trust has had no MRSA bloodstream infections since April 2009 and Clostridium difficile numbers have more than halved compared with this time last year.

Noroviruses are part of a group of viruses that are the most common cause of gastroenteritis (upset stomach) in the UK. Affecting between 600,000 and one million people in the UK every year, norovirus is a particular concern within contained environments such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools. Norovirus spreads very easily from person to person and can survive for several days in a contaminated area.

There are many types of norovirus, and it is possible for infection to occur several times because, following infection, immunity to the virus only lasts for 14 weeks.

Advancing the Study of Highly Dynamic Processes within Cells Much of our understanding of the structural

organisation of the living cell has come about through recent advances in fluorescence labelling of target molecules and laser scanning microscopy. With the release of DirectFRAP from Carl Zeiss, scientists can now make similar strides in probing the dynamics of membrane transport and the movement of molecules within the living cell.

FRAP, FLIP, photoactivation, conversion of Dendra, on-off switching of Dronpa and other photomanipulation techniques, use a combination of intense pulses of laser light and widefield epi-fluorescence observation to measure the movement of fluorescent markers within the cell. Fitted to the Carl Zeiss Axio Observer microscope, DirectFRAP overcomes the dynamic compromises inherent in previous systems by eliminating the link between laser intensity and the size of the ROI, allowing simultaneous photo-manipulation across the entire area and first image acquisition in as little as two milliseconds. The precise millisecond control of the laser pulses is achieved by acousto-optic tuneable filters (AOTFs) and the system is notable for its brilliant image formation at high acquisition rates and a wide observation field in fast experiments.

Flexible diaphragm options enable a high level of flexibility during experiments and DirectFRAP has been designed to be used in combination with other Carl Zeiss imaging systems, such as the Laser TIRF 3 or Cell Observer SD (Spinning Disc). These system combinations permit the observation of processes in a single Z plane and are ideal for the examination of the smallest cell structures. The same lasers can be used simultaneously for DirectFRAP and Laser TIRF 3 or Cell Observer SD. With all systems, laser pulse control and data acquisition is performed by the Zeiss AxioVision software.
