High-Output Compressor Range Circle no. 570

Compressor manufacturer Gast Group has extended its Jun-Air range of ultra- quiet compressors that provide clean, dry air for laboratory applications. The oil-free OF1200, a higher-output version of the best selling OF300, has an output of 130 l/min at 8 bar the OF1200 offers a useful 45% increase over the OF300, greatly extending the potential applications for the oil-free range.

The Characterisation of Nanoparticles to Develop New Biosensors

NanoSight has announced that the Centre for Molecular Nanometrology at the University of Strathclyde has selected an LM-10 characterisation system to aid in their research and development of new biosensors.

Lecturer, Dr Alastair Wark’s research interests are based around the preparation, functionalisation and application of plasmonic nanomaterials. The use of such nanometre-scale materials and tools is opening up exciting new avenues for the investigation of biomolecular interactions and biological systems with unprecedented sensitivity and spatial accuracy.

Other characterisation techniques such as UV-VIS adsorption spectroscopy and DLS (dynamic light scattering) are useful for bulk averaging measurements but it is the ability to visualise individual nanoparticles one at a time that drew former postdoctoral researcher Dr Robert Stokes whilst working with Professor Duncan Graham to select the NanoSight NTA system. This has catalysed the current research being lead by Dr Wark. “The NanoSight provides an intuitive way of sensing particles and being able to work dynamically in biocompatible liquids collecting multiple single sets of particle information gives statistical credibility to the data.”

This initial work is leading into developments for biosensors involving the controlled aggregation of functionalised nanomaterials in the presence of a specific target biomolecule. The ability to monitor this process in solution using particle-by- particle measurements cannot be achieved with bulk characterisation techniques.

NanoSight’s NTA approach has been shown to be ideally suited to such research activities and with the ability to not only look at spherical particles, but also characterize rod-like materials as well makes the system an extremely powerful nanoscale research and development tool.

The 50/60Hz dual-frequency also provides greater flexibility for exporting OEMs, as the OF1200 can operate anywhere in the world without the need for modification. Versions are also available to operate at 10 bar maximum pressure.

Units feature the same unique cooling system, wear-resisting piston rings and proven manufacturing technology as the OF300 and is designed for 100% reliability in continuous operation. Units are constructed with fewer moving parts in order to reduce wear and provide maximum reliability, minimum maintenance and a long working life and receivers are internally coated to guarantee an air supply that is in optimum condition.

To make installation easier for integrated solutions and demanding OEM-applications, multiple outlet ports are provided to allow connection in various directions.

However, the Gast Group has introduced a new range of soundproof cabinets for the OF1200 that reduce sound emissions to as low as 55 dB(A) which, combined with the attractive and easy-clean ‘medical’ white textured finish, makes them ideal for laboratory, medical and other working environments and for installation close to individual workstations. The new cabinet can be used freestanding or wall mounted and is available for compressors with outputs up to 146 l/min at 8 bar and tank sizes up to 40 litres. They feature a removable top for easy access, and are designed with usability, hygiene and maintenance in mind. All compressors are equipped with efficient ventilation and cooling to ensure their 100% continuous duty cycle is maintained when installed in a cabinet.

Old Autoclave are Worth Money

LTE Scientific has introduced its own scrappage scheme for customers looking to buy a new autoclave. Regardless of make, age or condition, LTE will take away customers old autoclaves and make an additional allowance against a new LTE autoclave. This offer applies across LTE Scientific’s entire autoclave range.

When buying a new LTE cylindrical-chambered autoclave, the minimum scrappage allowance LTE will offer is £500.00. When buying a new LTE square-chambered autoclave, the scrappage allowance increases to a minimum of £1000.00.

LTE’s Managing Director, John Lees, commented: “There are a number of potential customers who have old, inefficient autoclaves that don’t perform well or even comply with latest safety standards. They want to replace their old machines but money is a little tight. We feel that this offer will act as a stimulus for those wanting to buy a new autoclave but who need that little bit of extra help.”

LTE Scientific manufactures a wide range of autoclaves from 40 to 10,000 litres for both laboratory and medical applications. LTE operates a nationwide Service Team and is an ISO9001 and UKAS accredited Company.

The scrappage offer is open to all UK customers buying a new autoclave directly from LTE Scientific between now and the end of June 2010. This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other.
