Gas Detection
The World’s Leading Gas Detection Products and Technology will be Displayed at WWEM 2010
The organisers of WWEM, the world’s largest environmental monitoring event, have announced a new Gas Detection zone at the 2010 conference and exhibition, signalling coverage of the workplace environment for the first time. Traditionally focusing on environmental monitoring, the event will now also highlight airborne industrial hazards and risk assessment across all industries, with the participation of the Council of Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring (CoGDEM). Hazards include accidental exposure to low oxygen levels in confined spaces and to toxic, flammable or explosive gases. Most of the world’s leading manufacturers’ products will be on display at the WWEM exhibition, including; Alphasense, BOC, BW Technologies, Clairair, Crowcon, Cryoservice, Draeger, Gas Data, GfG, GMI, GSS, Honeywell Analytics, InfraTec, Ion Science, JMS, Linde, Quest Technologies, RAE Systems, Sensidyne, Shawcity, Sperian Instrumentation, STG and Trolex.
WWEM organiser Marcus Pattison says, "The main objective of the new gas detection zone is to provide visitors with access to all of the available technologies for both portable and fixed gas detection and monitoring. Experts will be available to demonstrate the equipment and to offer technical help and advice, and this will be supported by a comprehensive range of workshops covering subjects such as calibration, SIL and safety, and technologies such as electrochemical sensors, NDIR, PID, Ion Mobility and catalytic gas sensors.
Leigh Greenham, Director of CoGDEM, added, “Water industry workers who need to enter culverts, drains or sewers must follow the Confined Space Entry Regulations, which inevitably means checking the atmosphere using portable gas detectors. However, almost every manufacturing, processing or storage industry also has confined spaces that workers occasionally need to enter, so the display of suitable gas detectors at WWEM will give visitors the opportunity to see how best to protect their own staff and comply with the Regulations.”
Following the same format as previous WWEM events, WWEM 2010 will again take place over two days at the Telford International Centre on 10th and 11th November. Entry to the exhibition and workshops will be free (saving a daily admission fee of £20) to all pre-registered visitors, who will also be entitled to free onsite parking, free lunches and refreshments on both days of the event. In addition to the water sector, visitors to WWEM will include anyone with an interest in gas detection from almost any industry and particularly those with confined space, leak detection or poor ventilation issues. The SPIE society was founded in 1955 as Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers. Since the 80s its aim as a non-profit international organization has been the exchange, collection and propagation of knowledge in optics. SPIE is respected around the world as the highest board for photonic technologies. The introduced in 2008 are considered among experts as the “OSCAR” of photonic technologies and products.

InfraTec had submitted, via its North American subsidiary InfraTec Infrared LLC, the product ”New MEMS tunable Fabry-Perot Interferometer Microspectrometer for Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy“ for consideration. In the highly competitive category “Detectors, Sensing and Imaging Systems“ we stood up against well-known competition. After already being awarded with the German ”AMA- Sensorinnovationspreis“ in 2008, the Prism Award 2009 confirms the top position of the Fabry-Perot Microspectrometer.
This result could only be achieved by excellent collaboration with our colleagues from both the Center for Microtechnologies at the Chemnitz University of Technology and the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS. It emphasizes the innovation potential of our region in the field of unique technologies and products.
The microspectrometer product family has already been brought to market for the wavelength region between 3.0-4.1 µm and 3.9-4.8 µm. By the end of 2010 a new version for the wavelength region between 8.0-10.5 µm will be available. A prototype of this long wave version will be demonstrated in function at the booth of our German distribution partner Lasercomponents GmbH at the Sensor+Test fair 2010 in Nürnberg.

InfraTec is also planning to offer a dual band microspectrometer, which combines a short and long wavelength tuning range within one device. The mixed spectral information will be internally divided by a beamsplitter and provided separately at the device output.
