The new AP 3800 multi laboratory robot from Hach Lange (Germany) takes care of water analysis from start to finish, including sample preparation – also when a digestion step is needed. The basic version is pre-programmed for the LANGE cuvette tests for COD, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite. More methods can be added at any time. The AP 3800 multi uses the proven DR 3800 sc spectrophotometer as its detector.
A multifunctional arm and a variety of tools carry out all the necessary work steps of the cuvette tests, such as pipetting, dosing, inverting, shaking, thermostating, and manipulating DosiCaps.
The AP 3800 multi offers a high level of flexibility in single and series mode. More than one parameter can be analysed and evaluated in parallel. The control software shows a graphic overview of the current status of the sample sequence. An intelligent time management system monitors the work steps of the methods meticulously. It interleaves
several methods, so that, for example, a straightforward sample analysis can be in progress while sample preparation for a complex analysis is being carried out in the digestion block.
The LANGE cuvette tests are designed to satisfy sustainability criteria at all stages of their life cycle, from manufacture to proper disposal. In recognition of this, HACH LANGE has been nominated for the 2009 German Sustainability Award in the category "Germany's Most Sustainable Products and Services".

Synbiosis (UK)is pleased to announce that its innovative ProtoCOL 2 automated colony counter has been extensively tested to enable rapid, accurate counts of Legionella on any Legionella detection media.
The Synbiosis technical team found that by using the ProtoCOL 2 system, 600 Legionella plates could be accurately processed per hour, which is approximately 30 fold more than can be achieved using time consuming, error- prone manual techniques. The team used ProtoCOL 2's ground-breaking red, blue and green LED lighting (patent pending) with the dark screens shut to allow excellent reflection-free imaging of shiny buffered charcoal yeast extract media and Legionella colonies.
The team tested the ProtoCOL 2's method of capturing three different coloured images and automatically combining them to generate life-like full colour images. They established that this method ensured easy identification and counts of the Legionella colonies from background flora on Legionella growth media.
Martin Smith of Synbiosis commented: "Microbial contamination with Legionella, which can cause a potentially fatal
form of pneumonia, is ubiquitous in both man-made and natural water sources, and remains an increasing concern. The water industry is continually tightening its regulations worldwide and this has led to a significant increase in the screening and identification of Legionella bacteria in drinking, environmental and recreational water supplies."
Smith continued: "Plates of water samples tend to vary widely from low to very high counts. Automating the counting process and recording the results consistently is critical. Testing the ProtoCOL 2, we have proved the system delivers this, ensuring accurate quantification of Legionella in water samples, thus offering microbiologists an excellent method of rapidly checking the safety of water supplies and equipment."

Sensortechnics (Germany) expands its product portfolio of fluidic control devices as Certified Distributor of miniature liquid and pneumatic diaphragm pumps from the Hargraves Technology Corporation. As a leading supplier of high quality sensors, actuators and custom sensor designs as well as integrated sensing and fluidic control systems these new products add to the existing range for OEM device manufacturers in the medical, analytical, laboratory and instrumentation market.
Hargraves' miniature diaphragm pumps dispense precise amounts of gases and liquids which are completely isolated from the internal pump components. The air and gas pumps of the BTC, BTC-IIS and CTS series feature reduced noise levels and are highly efficient. The dual head pumps of this family deliver flow rates up to 11 l/min air and achieve pressures up to 1.4 bar (20 psi) and vacuum to 680 mbar (20 inHg). The liquid pumps of the LTC series offer high media compatibility with many aggressive fluids and very durable diaphragms from advanced proprietary elastomer materials. LTC miniature pumps deliver flow rates up to 650 ml/min water and achieve pressures up to 2 bar (30 psi). All Hargraves pumps feature low power consumption, optimised flow paths and excellent gas tightness. Due to superior brushless motor designs and selected materials these pumps allow very long service-free operation and extended overall life times.
