Water/Wastewater 19 A Revolution in On-Line Liquid Analysis

BioTector Analytical Systems Ltd. (Ireland) manufactures an innovative range of on-line liquid analysers, which apply a totally new approach to eliminating the many problems associated with on-line TOC, TN and TP measurement.

The BioTector is designed to analyse everything, from clean water to the most corrosive & polluted samples, with no filtering requirements. It’s patented oxidation method is what makes the BioTector unique. This oxidation process, known as Two Stage Advanced Oxidation (TSAO) is extremely aggressive and is therefore totally self-cleaning (Hydroxyl Radicals at an oxidation potential of 2.8 is only below fluorine). The reaction is unaffected by Chlorides (salts) up to 30% and the system can handle oils, fats and calcium up to 12.5%. Hence the BioTector is deemed to be the most reliable on-line liquid analyser on the market, with 6 month service intervals and <99.7% uptime with an accuracy of +/- 3%. It is designed so that there is no drift and therefore calibration is not required for the correct operation of the system.

The BioTector makes direct measurements without dilution in 6.5 minutes (TOC) and on a wide variety of ranges from 0-5mg c/l all the way up to 100,000mg c/l. Up to 86,000 samples per year can be successfully measured by the

BioTector and the analysers can be calibrated to read TOC, TN, NO3, TKN, TP, COD, BOD, TC, TIC and VOC. There are now over 500 BioTector units installed worldwide, many of which are operating in applications that would have been impossible with conventional technologies.

Reader Reply Card no 62 Positive Outlook for IFAT ENTSORGA

More than six months before its official opening, IFAT ENTSORGA is reporting good interim results. To date, the number of registrations already received for this year's IFAT ENTSORGA is higher than at the comparable point in time in 2008.

"We are more than satisfied with these results. The application situation clearly demonstrates that the industry welcomes the switch to a two-year cycle and supports the fact that Messe München is collaborating with BDE", said Eugen Egetenmeir, Managing Director of Messe München GmbH.

The decision to switch to holding the fair every two years was made a year ago. Messe München and BDE (Federation of the German Waste, Water and Raw Materials Management Industry) have been collaborating since the beginning of the year.

IFAT ENTSORGA has seen some impressive growth in the sector for "Water extraction/Water and sewage treatment", which will occupy an entire hall more than at IFAT 2008. Among others, the sector's leading companies such as Andritz, Huber, Kemira, Norit, Passavant-Geiger and Siemens will present themselves in Munich.

The fact that all of the industry's key players in the other product-group categories have already registered for the fair is also very gratifying. Leading manufacturers such as Alba, Lobbe, Remondis, Veolia Wasser, Tholander, SSI Schäfer, Sulo, Doppstadt, Hammel, Komptech, Liebherr, Mewa and Sennebogen, the German Biogas Association and companies such as Daimler, Faun, MAN, Zöller, Endress und Hauser, Nivus, VAG, Grundfos, ITT, KSB, Tyco, Buderus, St. Gobain, IBAK and IPEK are also exhibiting at IFAT ENTSORGA. e.on, MVV (Munich Transport and Tariff Association) and Vattenfall will also be represented in Munich.

Arkon (Czech Republic) are pleased to announce the launch of their new MAGB1 battery powered electromagnetic flowmeter. This new addition to the range makes it possible to install a reliable flowmeter virtually anywhere, without sacrificing accuracy or performance if mains power is not available. It is powered by 2 x 3.6V lithium batteries placed inside the transmitter. Battery life is up to 5 years. Communication is done via USB using MODBUS RTU protocol. Compact and remote versions are available (cable length limited to 6 meters for remote version).

Some of the features of the MAG B1 inlcude:

Accuracy: ± 0.5% of actual value; Graphic display and keypad for simple operation and instant access to information of 4 totalisers: total +, total -, total, aux; Graphic display turns off automatically when it is not being used, for battery conservation; Error detection; Empty pipe detection, automatically turns off the excitation to prolong battery life; Two built-in earthing electrodes; Standard USB interface communication via MODBUS RTU for configuration and data collection using MAGB1 software; Isolated binary output (pulse per liters or alarm or flowrate functions); Data logger - 1820

records, selectable interval of logging (5min - 24h); Adjustable filter constants 1 – 30 samples; and All units include a calibration certificate issued by an independent calibration rig, traceable to international standards, and calibration data is stored inside the sensor.

Palintest Ltd (UK) has developed a completely new method for testing Chlorine Dioxide levels in water. The ChlordioXense provides accurate testing without relying on subjective analysis for results. The instrument eliminates the potential for user error giving precise, consistent results whatever the operator's level of experience.

Developed from the successful electrochemical sensing technology in their ChloroSense digital chlorine sensor (now EPA approved), the ChlordioXense is very easy to operate. Simply insert a disposable electrode along with the water sample and close the lid to start a test. The instrument works for a wide range of concentrations, from 0.02 - 50 mg/l, with sample temperatures up to 40o

C, with results given clearly on the LCD screen in less than a minute.

Compared to the US EPA-approved Lissamine Green test method, the ChlordioXense gives accurate results with greater consistency. This means that the time taken and the training needed to get results is significantly reduced, benefiting a wide range of applications from food processing to paper mills and building services.

The unit stores up to 500 results in its on-board memory, and can be connected by USB to a PC for simple downloading. Powered by AA batteries and weighing less than 1kg, it is truly portable and offers effortless Chlorine Dioxide measurement for any situation.
