Semivolatiles Analysis


Phenomenex Inc. (USA) have announced the publication of a new technical note that provides information and tools for meeting and exceeding EPA Method 8270D guidelines. This method for semivolatiles (SVOCs) by GC/MS is widely used for solid waste testing in the environmental industry, and contains an exceptionally long list of compounds to be extracted from challenging, dirty matrices. GC column inertness is important for successful resolution of these target compounds. Phenomenex's Enviro-Inert Technology enables the production of columns that perform under the most demanding of conditions, even surpassing EPA requirements.


"Traditionally, general-purpose columns are not QC-tested to perform under the specific conditions that semivolatiles analyses present," explains Kristen Parnell, brand manager for GC products at Phenomenex. "Even columns marketed as 'inert' may not perform well for both the basic and acidic compounds found in these samples, because performance indicators specific to semivolatiles are not monitored in the QC process. A column may show good responses for bases at the expense of response for acids, or vise versa. GC chemists often must trim, condition or prime their columns and may still find that they fail to perform satisfactorily."


The application note details the importance of monitoring specific SVOC criteria during QC testing and reviews the performance of several GC columns typically used for EPA 8270D. A rigorous multi-test QC process, which includes requirements more stringent than the EPA method and ensures the high success rate of Zebron ZB-SemiVolatiles columns, is used as the basis for discussion and comparison.

analytica 2014: More Highlights, More Exhibitors


PDriven by innovations like the industry itself, analytica (Germany) will feature a new attraction when it opens in April 2014: For the first time ever, there will be a special show on occupational health and safety in the laboratory. Successful concepts such as the Live Labs and the renowned analytica Conference will also be continued.


While everyone waited with great anticipation for the innovative addition to last year’s trade fair, i.e. the Live Labs, the new topic on the 2014 program of events is occupational health and safety. Susanne Grödl, Exhibition Director for analytica, explains: “Whether in research or industry, the safety of laboratory employees is extremely important. Until now, none of the world’s trade fairs for analysis and laboratory technology featured a special show on the topic.” But the 2014 fair will cover it in live demonstrations that are part of the Live Labs. With some 3,000 visitors, they were the highlight of last year’s fair. In 2014, the Live Labs will be located in Halls B1, B2 and A3 again and will focus on topics such as food and water analysis, plastics analysis and the life sciences.


At this point, 580 companies have registered for the fair (compared to 553 exhibitors in 2011), and nearly two-thirds of the space in the five halls is occupied. Those companies include industry leaders such as Agilent, Analytik Jena, Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, Bruker, Büchi, Carl Zeiss, Eppendorf, GE Healthcare, Horiba, Julabo, Metrohm, Perkin Elmer, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Shimadzu and VWR International. As in the past, the share of international companies has also seen another increase – this time by 22 percent.
