Air Monitoring 31 Versatile Calibration of Trace Gas Analysers


Calibration of trace gas analysers is key for reliable quantification but it is also challenging in many ways, ranging from a well-defined production of stable trace concentrations to the choice of the right materials to minimise surface effects.


Ionicon Analytik (Austria) as a specialist manufacturer of real-time gas analysers and has many years of experience in trace gases analysis and calibration. Ionicon’s successful Gas Calibration Units (GCU) series relies on down-mixing of gaseous calibration standards. These reliable and simple-to-use instruments depend on the availability of gaseous standards for the compounds of interest. To provide more flexibility in the choice of the compounds to calibrate Ionicon has released a new series of calibration products.


The Ionicon Liquid Calibration Unit (LCU) evaporates aqueous calibration standards into a gas stream, resulting in a gas flow containing compounds at defined trace concentrations. The preparation of an aqueous standard mixture is simple and can be done immediately for a large variety of compounds. A very low solubility of a compound in water is already sufficient to achieve the desired trace concentrations.


To produce gas concentrations of organic and inorganic compounds, the Ionicon LCU evaporates a defined flow of an aqueous standard into a clean gas stream of 1000 ml/min. A special flow controller allows precise control of the liquid flow between 1 and 50 µl/min. Its internal volumes have been reduced to a minimum to allow fast rinsing and quick change to another standard. The concentrations that can be produced range from ‰ down to ppt. The highly efficient evaporation in the LCU is achieved by nebulisation of the liquid. The resulting micro-droplets evaporate in a heated evaporation chamber. This has been shown to work both for volatile as well as semi-volatile compounds. The LCU has successfully been tested with a growing variety of compounds, including ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, amines, terpenes, organic acids, and esters. Moreover, an additional gas flow controller allows the admixing of gas calibration standards, adding the ease of use of gaseous standards to the flexibility aqueous standards offer.


The LCU is a cost efficient and highly versatile calibration device for trace gas analysers that can be implemented in many fields of research, such as food and flavour, biotechnology, breath-gas analysis, environmental research, and petrochemical analysis.

Airodis is a software package designed to retrieve, validate and audit data collected from a variety of environmental monitoring systems. It operates on Windows XP/7 and supports single or multi-user installations. Data can be interrogated in the SQL database and then directed to websites for public or internal display.


The Airodis web module makes producing sophisticated web pages displaying your data reports easy. Data can be displayed on a web page in multiple formats and provides the user with total control to view both current and historical data for multiple time periods using just a web browser.


Any report created in Airodis can be generated using a web browser for a custom date range. All that is required is for the Airodis administrator, using the Web Module, to generate one or more "permalinks" which can then be embedded into a web site by a website administrator.


Multiple report outputs can be generated for embedding and include: HTML; MS Word; MS Excel; Adobe PDF; CSV & TXT; JPG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, GIF & EMF graphical formats; AQS & AirNow formats.


Depending on the output format, the link when opened in a web browser may open in a new browser tab or prompt to be saved to disk or opened by an external application. eg MS Word. The Airodis Web Module provides the administrator with a sophisticated easy to use web development tool.

Steam Heated Gas Sampling Probe


The heated gas sampling probe JES 301G from JCT Analysentechnik (Austria) is designed for continuous sampling in processes with high dust content. As the heating source is steam, the probe can also be used in ATEX Zone 1 or 2 where electrical connections may cause problems. JCT´s heated hose series JH can be easily connected directly to the JES 301G. Gas Sample Probes incorporate a calibration and / or back purge port are also as an option available.


The operating temperature of max. 200°C is regulated by the steam pressure. A sample ceramic filter element with a filter porosity of 2 micron and the filtration from outside to the inside ensure that the gas passes the heated hose free of dust particles. The filter can be replaced easily without any tools while the heated hose stays connected.


The heated gas sampling probe JES 301G is extremely robust to provide many years of operation in harsh environment. Typical process or CEM applications can be found in chemical and petrochemical industry.


A broad range of different materials for filter elements, In-situ probe tubes and large In-situ-pre filters make the JES 301G versatile in application.
