18 Environmental Laboratory Clever new GC is small but powerful

Making more space for high-performance analyses Shimadzu announces the release of the Brevis GC-2050, a more compact version of the popular GC-2030. The new Brevis GC-2050 further advances the Shimadzu tradition of delivering high-precision gas chromatography analyses – while simultaneously saving valuable laboratory bench space.

Laboratory space is very cost-intensive to set up and maintain, and the number of analyses that can be performed simultaneously in a lab is often limited by the available bench space. The new Shimadzu GC-2050 addresses this challenge by combining low space requirements with high analytical performance. Small enough that a typical laboratory table can accommodate several units, the GC-2050 allows the simultaneous operation of two analytical lines with standard capillary columns. As with the successful GC-2030 – its larger sibling – it uses the same techniques for sample injection and detection as well as gas control.

The GC-2030 provides a colour touchscreen on the instrument. This is usually not needed during regular operations but is a valuable tool for maintenance work and troubleshooting. For the GC-2050 a remote display app provides full connectivity and functionality on any MS-Windows-compatible desktop, laptop or tablet. Naturally, a tablet or other touchscreen-enabled device provides the most fl exible and effi cient means to reap the benefi ts of the new GC-2050. Mobile monitoring helps keep things moving.

Helium is the preferred carrier gas in gas chromatography, but its limited supply and high price suggest that GC operators have increasingly been turning to other gases as more economical alternatives. The GC-2050 software allows operators to easily choose their carrier gas from among hydrogen, helium, nitrogen and argon. Whatever gas is used, the GC-2050 immediately detects bigger gas leaks through its rugged gas controllers. Minor leaks are also detected by the automated leak check performed after maintenance work. For even greater safety, a dedicated hydrogen sensor can be installed that stops the gas supply before dangerous concentrations of hydrogen are reached.

Because gas consumption is one of the major expenses in GC operations, the new GC-2050 also offers various techniques for reducing these costs. For example, full split fl ow is only required during sample injection. During the remaining GC runtime, the gas saver reduces consumption and avoids unnecessary use of the carrier gas. If expensive helium is being used, the gas selector switches automatically to the cheaper nitrogen and then back to helium as soon as a new sample measurement is started. At night or during longer rest periods, the GC can shut down automatically after fi nishing all running analyses. It then restarts automatically whenever the operator wishes to resume testing.

The Analytical Intelligence of the GC-2050 saves working time for other important tasks. One click or swipe is all that is needed to select a maintenance procedure or predefi ned column condition at any time. In the same way, the predefi ned GC shutdown and fl exible restart procedures can be initiated and performed automatically by the instrument.

In addition to providing a simple, compact, economical and high-precision solution, Shimadzu’s new GC-2050 also offers greater fl exibility and scalability. The GC-2050 can easily be equipped with an SPL injector as well as an FID (fl ame ionisation detector), FPD (fl ame photometric detector), ECD (electron capture detector) and an MS (mass spectrometry) detector. Shimadzu’s liquid autoinjectors AOC-30i and AOC-20i can also be combined with the autosampler AOC-20sU for higher sample capacities. And, for headspace injection, the GC-2050 can be operated together with the HS-20 NX headspace sampler. For further ease of use, the GC-2050 can be operated using LabSolutions as well as several other chromatography data software (CDS) platforms. The GC-2050 can also be optionally equipped with user-friendly ClickTek technology for faster and easier exchange of capillary columns.

The new Brevis GC-2050 is the latest GC instrument in the long Shimadzu tradition of offering laboratories more precision, more savings and more space in which to continue to do their valuable work.

Solvent emissions cause many occupational diseases, breakdowns, and malfunctions. Especially in instrumental analysis, failures can be costly if they result in interruptions and maintenance work. SCAT’s Safety Caps block solvent vapours and ensure clean, reliable analysis. It has never been so easy to protect your health and save costs at the same time.

The SCAT system blocks solvent vapours and keeps your eluents clean. It protects your health, environment, and the quality of your analytical results. The mixing ratio of your solvents stays stable, as there is no evaporation.

Solvent vapours are toxic, fl ammable, and harmful to health. They escape even through smallest openings and leaks. During long-time exposure, even small concentrations in the laboratory air can cause serious health risks and damage. Hermetically closed systems reduce emissions to zero; when extracting the eluent, the SCAT air valve ensures safe pressure equalisation to avoid excessively low pressure during HPLC operation. On the waste side of your HPLC, the exhaust fi lter avoids overpressure inside the collecting container and adsorbs vapours of solvents, acids and bases with a mix of 3 types of activated carbon.

The SCAT System offers an easy way to ensure safety and quality for your HPLC lab. It can be installed with a minimum of effort and cost, compared to the hassle of installing ventilation systems for each workplace.

HTA has announced the release of the 2800T, the new all-in-one autosampler empowered by Artifi cial Intelligence, that can automate, all by itself, headspace analysis, liquid sample injection and SPME in any GC and GC-MS system.

After renewing the 3000A Series of GC automatic liquid samplers and the 2000H Series of headspace autosamplers, HTA has fi nally extended Artifi cial Intelligence technology to the 2800T multifunctional autosampler. The new smart technologies mark the difference bringing signifi cative benefi ts for analytical laboratories in terms of ease of use, speed and reliability.

For More Info, email: email:

Integrated artifi cial intelligence functionalities effectively contribute to streamline laboratory workfl ow and simplify sample processing. Constant and automatic monitoring of all the parts and consumables, not only of the autosampler itself but even of the GC, guarantee hassle-free operation and the certainty of always having punctual and reliable results thanks to predictive maintenance. From any point of view, Artifi cial intelligence makes things easier, starting from a perspective of analytical performances, going through the increment of intuitiveness and usability up to the logics of technical service accessibility.

For More Info, email: email:

When one looks at application fl uency, 2800T features the best versatility profi le of the market. With 2800T, it takes only 5 minutes to switch between modes and 5 minutes to move between GCs. In less than a 5-minute period end users can move the HTA autosampler from one GC to another, swap HTA autosamplers or share HTA autosamplers among several GCs to face any workload peak. Regardless of whether samples need be processed in headspace, liquid, or SPME mode, or if the method requires split, splitless or on-column injection, 2800T is ready in a few minutes.

Despite being able to cover all the GC automation tasks needed in the lab, the 2800T offers an extremely intuitive operation: the high-quality touchscreen provides smooth system accessibility and ease of use allowing users to start the sample processing only by a mere touch.
