Combustion System Provides Safe Determination of Halogens, Phosphorus & Sulphur
Extensive Laboratory Service Now Available
A range of high performance laboratory-based analytical services are now available from Omex Environmental (UK), specialists in micro-nutrient technology.
In addition to advanced on-site technical support, Omex can provide new and existing customers with a nutrient profiling service. This is the basis for advice on how to assess the correct nutrient dosage (both amount and type) in biological treatment systems such as activated sludge and anaerobic processes. It is also a way of giving periodical checks on the health of the overall system to enable optimum performance.
Nutrient profiling services feature nitrogen, phosphorus and essential trace element analysis, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total solids and suspended solids and the microbiological assessment of activated sludge can be carried out, providing extremely useful data for the customer.
This includes, for instance, the identification of filamentous bacteria which can be used to establish the cause of an undesirable infestation. Furthermore, the identification of certain indicator organisms can detect problems and give an indication of the health of the system.
For anaerobic processes and biogas production, AMPTS (Automatic Methane Potential Test System) and essential trace element analysis are used for investigating anaerobic digestion and biogas production. Omex can predict the potential outcome of the addition of TEA (trace element additives) to a specific system to provide confidence before going to trial stage while also using AMPTS to improve formulations.
Omex now offers a range of high performance laboratory-based analytical services
The Model OFCU-1 from Exeter Analytical (UK) provides a highly safe tool for preparing samples for elemental analysis of Halogens, Phosphorus and Sulphur using the Oxygen Flask Combustion procedure.
The oxygen flask combustion procedure is provided as the preparatory step in the determination of bromine, chlorine, fluorine, iodine, phosphorus and sulphur in some Pharmacopeial articles. Combustion of the material under test (usually organic) yields water-soluble inorganic products, which may be analysed for specific elements as directed in the individual Pharmacopeia monograph or general chapter. The oxygen flask combustion procedure using the attractively priced OFCU-1 is capable of being used for repeatable determination of elemental composition from percentage levels to parts per million.
The durably constructed Oxygen Flask Combustion Unit (OFCU-1) copes easily with a wide range of sample types and is very simple to set up, use and maintain. Built with operator safety in mind, the OFCU-1 remotely ignites samples inside a safety interlocked chamber using focused infrared heat from two tungsten-halogen lamps. Integral pressure vents ensure safe release of excess reaction pressure. A thick black acrylic observation window is provided on the OFCU-1 to allow users to visually check ignition has taken place.

Omex lab services based at its King's Lynn laboratories also include the analysis of most elements in inorganic treatment systems using a variety of techniques, such as ICP for metals (including essential trace elements and other metals), analysis for low and high concentrations of total nitrogen (Ammonia/Urea/Nitrogen), and a variety of other chemical and photometric techniques.
Assessment of neutralisation efficiency, metals removal, and sludge reduction when using magnesium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide suspensions can also be undertaken.

Environmental Monitoring under the Microscope
Environmental monitoring specialist, enitial (UK), has been selected as a preferred partner of the National Laboratory Service (NLS) to provide a comprehensive environmental sampling, monitoring and analysis service.
The framework of suppliers, which has been set up by NLS to help meet the demands of its growing commercial portfolio, includes four providers of sample and field based services, one of which is enitial.
Hamamatsu Photonics (UK) has announced the release of a new ultra-compact xenon flash lamp module for use in compact spectroscopy instruments for environmental and medical analysis. The L12336 is the world’s smallest 2W xenon flash lamp module, measuring only 42 x 42 x 38 mm. It features a built-in trigger socket, offers battery-powered operation and delivers a long lamp lifetime of 1.0 x 10⁹ flashes, in addition to highly stable operation (0.5% CV) and a maximum repetition rate of 1250 Hz.
These features make it an ideal, easy to use light source for compact spectroscopy and portable instruments for high- precision environmental monitoring or point-of-care testing.

Ivor Parry, business development director at enitial said: “enitial is always striving to provide a high quality service and has worked with the National Laboratory Service (NLS) previously to provide a sampling service that is second to none. Being chosen as a preferred partner is testament to the unrivalled level of sampling and field based services we offer.”
Karen McKenzie Fawcett, head of commercial at the National Laboratory Service (NLS), added: “NLS prides itself on being a centre of excellence for environmental analysis so it is essential that our partners aspire to the same level of quality. NLS already has a strong delivery relationship with enitial working for clients such as Severn Trent Water. We look forward to working on more projects with them as our commercial laboratory services grow.”
The framework of preferred suppliers will support the NLS’ commercial activities to help meet the demands of a growing commercial portfolio. When a relevant opportunity arises, enitial will form part of the tender team to provide a competitive bid. If successful, enitial will manage, collect and report on samples which will then be analysed by NLS.
