JGAA hands out awards for POYs, good sports
T
he Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) held its annual awards banquet to recognize the outstanding golf accom-
plishments of its members, including the Player of the Year and Sportsmanship Award recipients across five age divisions. Boyd Summerhays, professional golfer
and renowned local golf instructor with a storied pedigree in the game, was the guest speaker for the event held at Moon Valley Country Club. Among the many words of wisdom Summerhays shared, he talked about the importance of “finding someone to play and practice with who makes you better.” It just so happens the JGAA is chock-full of kids fitting that description. Ashley Menne is one of them. For the second consecutive year,
Menne, 15, earned the POY Award in the girls championship division with a scoring average of 69.7. She won 13 of the 19 JGAA tournaments she entered without finishing higher than third place. As the No. 1-ranked junior girl golfer in Arizona, and 45th-ranked nationally, Menne also competed on Team Arizona in the Girls Junior America’s Cup, USGA Women’s State Team Chamiponship as well as the U.S. Girls Junior. “As the busy 2017 season comes
to an end, it’s fun to look back at all the accomplishments, including the many milestones Ashley left in her wake,” said Scott McNevin, executive director of the JGAA. “But in many cases, it’s not
so easy to settle on a winner. Congratulations to the award recipients as well as every JGAA member.” In the boys championship division, Daniel Thompson, 14, took POY honors with a scoring average of 72.7. Thompson finished in the top five of
