has flourished along the northern edge of Tucson, its newest addition, Sewailo Golf Club, lies at the polar opposite end. It is the home course for the Arizona Wildcats. Sewailo (SAY-WHY-LOW), which
is managed by Troon Golf, is part of the Casino Del Sol Resort on Pascua Yaqui tribal land southwest of the city. Designed by Notah Begay, Sewailo is a Native American word meaning “land where flowers grow.” The layout, which was named one of the country’s top 10 best new courses by Golf Digest in 2014, is a departure from desert golf with 12 acres of lakes, stunning vistas and mountain backdrops blending with native landscape. It reflects the topography of Tucson,
which is situated on an alluvial plain of the Sonoran Desert. The city is surrounded by five mountain ranges with an elevation of 2,643 feet and gets about 12 inches of rain per year, which is right on the edge of what defines a desert. One result is that it features

mountains. And while golf courses don’t provide all of the greenery, they certainly add to the vision. “Many people have a picture in their
minds of a desert being just miles of dirt but the desert here certainly is not like that,” Sewailo general manager Paul Nolen said. “I can see why the people who settled Tucson picked this place with the mountains and the
vegetation and the weather, which is unbeatable. Lush desert might sound like a contradiction but that’s what we have.” El Conquistador is a different type of
property in that it’s privately owned by a municipality. “El Con,” as it is known locally, was a long-established and popular golf facility as part of a nearby Hilton resort until the town of Oro Valley purchased the courses in 2015. Troon
