Explosions highlight risks involved in handling dangerous goods
The carriage of dangerous goods exploded into the news last month with two incidents widely reported. A dramatic fire led to the
complete destruction of an HGV laden with aerosols on the M11 in Essex and, further afield, a large explosion on a containership in the port of Jebel Ali rocked nearby
buildings and was even seen from space. Fortunately no-one was hurt in
either case but incidents like this serve as timely reminders of the potential consequences when something goes wrong. Dangerous goods classifications
and rules exist for all modes of transport, both domestically and
internationally, and Members are reminded of their responsibilities when accepting such goods for shipment. Ensure that your staff can
recognise dangerous goods and act accordingly – see
https://bifa.org/training/dangerous- goods for training course availability.
