YFF & AOTY Profiles A passion for logistics

For Sam Greenhalgh, logistics is something of a family tradition: his grandparents owned a haulage business where his father also worked. Now Sam has been a finalist in BIFA’s Young Freight Forwarder Award category

Sam Greenhalgh joined Zencargo three years ago. Promoted to business development director in September 2020, he has found working for a start-up to be an exciting challenge. “The thought of ‘moving the economy’ inside

metal containers across the globe has always inspired me,” Sam said. “Now, having spent a third of my life in freight

forwarding, I have had the chance to work with different cultures, across time zones and with a range of industries. I have also had the opportunity to work on the Zencargo supply chain platform and build it up to a complete end- to-end solution.” Sam’s heritage and experience in logistics

An enriching business

BIFA Apprentice of the Year finalist Chloe Hamlett had little notion of what

logistics involved until she began an apprenticeship with Charles Kendall Freight

FORWARDER OF THE YEAR AWARD SPONSOR

Virgin Atlantic Cargo is proud to sponsor BIFA’s ‘Young Freight Forwarder Award’ to recognise and encourage the next generation of industry leaders. have given him not just a holistic understanding of the industry, but also a vision for the future. “I love the thought of being a pioneer in a

traditional industry,” he said. “My main motivation is the future of freight forwarding technology, and building innovative products. “COVID-19 has been a catalyst for

digitalisation and the use of technology rather than traditional ways of doing things. I am a glass half-full kind of person and I think these changes are positive.” Sam’s passion for freight forwarding even

prompted him to start a podcast in which he discusses topics with international guests from across the industry. “The focus of ‘What’s in the Box?’ is people, technology and the supply chain,” he said. “It’s time consuming – but definitely worth it.”

“It makes sense for me to do this because I

Chloe Hamlett described freight forwarding as “enriching”, both in terms of its role in economic growth and on a personal level. She said: “It keeps shops open, goods

moving and businesses going. Also, each day is different – you face different problems, handle different shipments – so you are always learning new things.” Chloe was shy and reserved when she first joined Charles Kendall Freight (CKF), but she

soon gained confidence. “I was welcomed into the company and well

cared for – and my colleagues keep teaching me as I grow,” she explained. “I have the self- knowledge, and the belief from my colleagues, that I can do this.” Having been with CKF for over two years now

and gained a Distinction in her apprenticeship, Chloe has enjoyed mentoring the company’s newest apprentice.

was a novice too and followed the same steps, so I can share my knowledge,” she said. “Also, being younger I have a different perspective on things.” Chloe also helps more seasoned colleagues

whenever she can – for instance, she has become a ‘Super User’ of the CKF’s Cargo Wise operating system and is now coaching the company’s staff both in the UK and overseas. Looking ahead, she said: “I would like to learn

about new destinations and expand my skillset in more specialist areas like hazardous goods.”
