Brexit: who pays the bill?
With full controls on imports into the UK coming into force from 1 January 2022, it is important that Members start planning in order to minimise delays and protect their business interests
Approximately four-and-a-half acrimonious years and three prime ministers after the Brexit referendum, the UK finally left the EU. During that period the nation contended with the global pandemic, which has made any assessment of the economic and trade situation more difficult. The writer recalls numerous comments regarding Brexit painting an optimistic future – “Take back control”, “Red, White

and Blue Brexit” and “Brexit means Brexit”. In many ways the political aspect of Brexit is concluded – but as we shall see later, the same is not true of trade. In fact, many argue that the worst is still to come. It has to be recalled that the UK used to import twice as
