WhenSawhit cinemasbackin2003, it redefinedthe genreofhorror aswe knewit.Madebyrelativelyunknownsat the time, theone-offfilmspawned multiple sequelswhichwas grindedtoa halt as the qualityanddemandfor gore-pornhorror fadedaway. Jigsawwas the 2017 comebackfor the Saw franchise as itamassedover $100 millionat thebox-officeona $10 million budget.Unfortunately, itwasn’twell receivedbycritics. Spiral: FromtheBookof Sawisanother attempt tocatapult the franchise backtothe topwith a different lookathowthe story canbeplayedout. But will it fall for thesame tropesor reinvent the franchise?

amouslybeingknown for lackinganyA-Star talent in the Saw

movies, with Spiralwehave the legendary comedic actor ChrisRockin the leadrole alongside themoth******** himself,SamuelLJackson. Evenifyouarenot a fanof the seriesofmovies, those twonames alonebring some interest aroundthenew storyandwith thehopethat it canaddsome acting quality, whichtheyallhave severelylacked. ChrisRock plays DetectiveBanks, a loner copin a stationthat is hatedbyall theother cops for handing in a dirtycopa few years back. Isolatedin his role, hisbiggest task comes upwhenthebodyof a close copfriendof his is found deadinwhat looks tobe a Jigsawtrap.

The excitement levelswere highfor this triptothe cinema. Not becauseof the film, but this isour return to cinemasin theUKsince they

reopenedfor the thirdtime duringCOVID.Wehave to say, the expectations for Spiralweren’t set particularly highbutwe expected something fairlydecent to get usby.Unfortunately, Spiral adds tothe ever growingpileof evidence as to whythe Sawfranchise is deadandburied.Thefilm triesdesperatelytobe something different tothe others. The storyline is focusedoncopswhichadds something slightlydifferent but theplot is sopredictable that the funof trying toguess whothe killer is fades away very quickly. Instead,we are leſtwithChannel 5, low- budgetdetective copshow acting that fails toentertain or shockatanymoment throughout. What is themost disappointing is thatRock andJacksonarebothpretty poor in the film. Jacksononly hasabout 10minutesof screen timeandRocktries very hardtobe seriousbut it doesn’twork.

Oneof themost exciting parts of the Sawmovies is the traps. Theanticipationofwhatnew trapwill be introducedand howthe personwill die in spectacular, gory fashion. I cancountononehandthe amountof traps that are present in thefilmandoneof themiscut awayvery quickly. Theonlyreasonwhyanyone wouldgoseeoneof these films is for its signature trap andconclusion. Spiral failson these twokeyaspectsandin theend,we are leſtwith a hugelyunderwhelming additionthat adds absolutely nothing tothe franchiseand is further evidence that it finallyneeds tobeput tobed. Audienceswant cleverand thoughtprovokinghorrors fromthe likesof AriAster, JordanPeeleandRobert Eggers. We are tiredof gore- porn slashingmovies like this.
