18 MARINA VISIT Kinsale Yacht Club, Ireland
T
he Kinsale Yacht Club (KYC) was established in 1953 and it was only eight years later that the Editor first
journeyed by train from London to Fishguard in Wales and then aboard the ‘Innisfallen’, a ship of just 3,705 gross tons, for the overnight trip to Cork. Staying at the Irish Youth Hostel at Summer Cove, just around the bay from Kinsale, his visit to this beautiful area still remains sharp after 60 years of travelling for leisure and on business to many other lands! The Club was first based in two
cottages opposite the slip at Scilly, across the harbour from the current location and the clubhouse was purchased in the early 1960s. In 1978,

the Club and its members funded and built the first marina, which was extended in 2003 to its present layout that provides a total of 200 berths. A major refurbishment of the clubhouse was carried out in 2013, with a recent upgrade to the marina being accomplished by Inland and Coastal Marina Systems just a few months ago. This Irish marina builder replaced 40 metres of the main pontoon in Leg F with a wider (3 metres) GRC-decked walkway, as well as adding a new 2 metre wide hammerhead, standard finger piers and pole fingers. Commodore did not want to gybe that far out to sea! Later, a 45 gallon drum was placed upriver and used as
an upwind mark until the new bridge was built in the ‘70s. All the boats at that time were kept on swing moorings in the river. Ireland was a different place then and the following decades have witnessed Kinsale become a world- renowned destination for gourmets, with a variety of restaurants serving menus ranging from traditional Irish dishes to international cuisine presented with an individual sense of flair.
