News NHS thanks

NHS Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) marked national Patient Participa- tion Group Awareness Week (May 31-June 6) by thanking all patient representatives who helped shape health services. . It continues to encourage mem- bers of the public to contact their GP practice to find out how they can join their own PPG. In the last 12 months, public par- ticipation has helped to design end of life care, dementia services, and ‘long Covid’ support.

Village concern over homes on school site

HARRIETSHAM residents have voiced disappointment at plans submitted to Maidstone Borough Council for development of the old school buildings on the A20. Under plans submitted by MK Projects London Ltd, the derelict buildings will be replaced by five homes, two with five bedrooms, and three with four bedrooms. All properties will have a garage. Some residents complained on social media about the plans. But Harrietsham parish council- lor Eddie Powell said: “It’s excel- lent that something is finally being done with the site.

“I’m assured the school build-

ings will be replaced with quality eco-friendly housing and much of the original material will be re- used on the builds to ensure they complement the area.”

But comments posted on the vil- lage Facebook page include: “My

ancestors must be turning in their graves. Absolutely shocking.” Another said: “My old school. So, so sad.” Plans have been drawn up by MBC to designate East Street, Har- rietsham, as a conservation area. The street (pictured) was a main road through the village, connect- ing Maidstone and Ashford, with a mix of dwellings, trades and com- mercial buildings Today, the street is cut off from the rest of the village by the A20,

but retains a mix of buildings, from grand Georgian dwellings to the more humble almshouses, dating from the 17th century. Councils have a legal obligation to designate conservation areas, defined as “an area of architectural or historic interest, the character and appearance of which it is de- sirable to preserve or enhance”. The draft plans are available to view on the MBC website. Com- ments should be sent to the con- servation team at MBC.
