MP faces change in constituency

MAIDSTONE and the Weald MP Helen Grant could face a strong Liberal Democrat challenge in a shake-up of parliamentary con- stituencies at the next election. Large chunks of Conservative

Mrs Grant's true blue rural com- munities in Maidstone and The Weald would be subsumed into a new Weald of Kent constituency. The Boundary Commission is seeking to increase the number of Kent MPs from 17 to 18, to reflect a growing population.

Her “patch” would take in most of the county town – borough council wards largely held by Lib Dems – and gain Lib Dem-held areas such as East Malling. It will be named Maidstone and Malling. But gone will be Tory enclaves such as Hunton, Linton, Staple- hurst, Cranbroook and Marden. Faversham and Mid-Kent MP

Helen Whately would lose wards on the edges of her constituency,

and villages such as Leeds and Ul- combe to the Weald of Kent seat. The new leader of KCC’s Lib

Dem group, former MEP Antony Hook, was mooted as a candidate. Barrister Mr Hook (41) said: “It’s flattering to be thought of but, no, not at the moment.” Mrs Grant gained a 21,772 ma- jority in 2019, with 42% of the vote on a turnout of nearly 68%. The commission is required to make sure constituencies have similar electorates, meaning the number of English MPs would rise by 10 to 543. Its proposals are now under public consultation. A spokesman for Mrs Grant said: “The initial proposals are subject to extensive consultation. The consultation process last time saw more than 50% of the compo- sition of constituencies change and this is just the start of the process, thus it is far too early to com- ment.”

Blue Bus work rewarded

URBAN Blue Bus, the volunteer first aid and welfare point serving Maid- stone’s town centre on Saturday nights, received a visit from the High Sheriff of Kent. John Weir, and his wife Beverley, presented the High Sheriff’s Award

for work in the community to Blue Bus trustee Val Jacobs, on behalf of all the team. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the bus provides welfare services to

anyone enjoying the night-time economy in the town centre. Our picture shows trustee Val Jacobs holding the award with volun- teers and High Sheriff John Weir and his wife Beverley.
