Central Foods Makes It

Easy to Care for Your

It is estimated that 1.3 million Britons are now on a gluten free diet – the medical treatment for coeliac disease.

Yet, in a recent poll by Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac disease, over a third of respondents (36%) said their biggest concern when eating out was about being an ‘inconvenience’.

Almost half (48%) were worried about being accidently ‘glutened’, a term used to describe when they consume food that has been cross-contaminated with gluten. Being ‘glutened’ makes coeliacs feel extremely poorly while the gluten works its way out of their system, which can take anything up to a week, severely impacting their everyday lives.

Frozen food distributor Central Foods has been supplying delicious gluten- free products to the food service sector for the past 12 years – making it easy for venues to cater for their gluten-free customers. These customers are the ones in the group/family who decide where to eat so it is imperative operators cater for their dietary requirements or risk losing more than just their business.

“Pre-prepared frozen products are a particular bonus for caterers – post-Covid – working in kitchens with social distancing in place and, or, with reduced prep areas for free-from menu items,” explains Central Foods MD Gordon Lauder. “They reduce the number of touch points needed to prepare the dish in the kitchen, thus helping to cut the chance of cross-contamination. They also help to cope with unexpected demand.”

Whether you’re looking for gluten-free starters, snacks, main courses or desserts, Central Foods has something to suit all menus. Try the KaterVeg! Moroccan-style Cauliflower Bites for a simple appetiser – they are perfect for tapas too!

Chicken is a popular choice on many menus and Central Foods offers four gluten-free chicken products, including the mouth-watering Golden Valley Foods gluten-free chicken Kievs. Tasty and convenient, the Kievs make a great lunch or dinner, served with chips and salad or a selection of seasonal vegetables.

To round things off, Central Foods has a range of Menuserve vegan and gluten-free desserts that are made with smooth and creamy vegan cream ‘cheese’ but taste so good they are enjoyed by all diners. They are pre-portioned to reduce wastage and ensure consistency of presentation.

“Free-from options, for those who have genuine allergies and intolerances as well as for the ‘lifestylers’, have become a well-established necessity on menus for caterers wishing to maximise their customer base and bottom line,” added Gordon Lauder. “This trend has accelerated in response to the pandemic, as a result of people’s heightened focus on their health and well-being. Plus, the introduction of Natasha’s Law later this year has reinforced the importance of being aware of allergens and intolerances.”
