COME BACK TO WHAT YOU KNOW
Finally, hospitality businesses can open their doors once more and let their customers back inside. Obviously, re‑opening safely has brought new challenges for the sector, which has been hit hard by the restrictions imposed by the Government in response to the COVID‑19 pandemic.
When the first step out of lockdown was implemented many businesses were unable to open due to a lack of outside space, and some took the hard decision to hold out until step two, when indoor entertaining could recommence. And now that time has arrived!
Your customers have missed socialising, and are eager to get back out into the pubs and bars to meet with friends and family. However, many may also be feeling anxious about this step, so re-opening with not only safety in mind, but also creating a space where patrons become regulars, and your venue be considered an escape from the worries of the outside world.
Check out our tips on creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable establishment that will have your customers returning time and time again.

SAFETY FIRST The safety of both your customers and staff is always of paramount importance, but even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone should feel protected, so make sure you follow all the guidelines recommended by the Government, carry out risk assessments regularly, and ensure your staff receive all the relevant information and training they need to keep themselves and your visitors safe. Ignorance is neither bliss nor an excuse. Make sure you check out the
GOV.UK website for all the recommendations for maximum capacity, spacing regulations, any curfews, and licence requirements and restrictions. Staying informed will keep you legally compliant and ensure you remain open during the journey through each step of the roadmap.
KEEP YOUR CUSTOMERS ‘APPY’ With the new restrictions in place, table service may be a challenge for many bars as it requires more staff, particularly in busy areas or venues with large gardens. One way to overcome this is to sign up for one of the many pub and bar ordering apps that are available, and request that all customers (where they can) use the app to place their orders and pay. Do remember to have a back up plan though, not everyone
has smart phones, and you wouldn’t want to alienate anyone just because they aren’t tech savvy or their battery has died!
THE BEAUTIFUL GAME If you don’t already show live sport in your bar, perhaps now is the time to consider doing so. Sports fans all over the country have been missing the atmosphere of going to the pub to watch the game and you could tap into that potential revenue stream by adding live sports to your offering. According to research, 30% of people will head out to the pubs and bars to watch games in this summer’s football Euros, with 15% lingering on after the final whistle.*
DON’T FORGET YOUR GARDEN Back in April, many pubs and bars made the best use of their outside space as they could, making it appealing and comfortable to encourage business back to the trade, despite the inclement weather! Now you can utilise your inside space once again, ensure that outside area continues to thrive. Keeping your furniture clean and maintained regularly and ensuring the grounds are clean and tidy will encourage customers to continue to spend time outside, once summer arrives.
