LOVELY LEOMINSTER AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES

DID YOU KNOW?

Much of the town’s wealth came from the wool trade and Leominster is the historical home of Ryeland sheep, a breed once famed for its ‘Lemster’ wool, known as 'Lemster ore'. This wool was prized above all other English wool in the Middle Ages and attracted the envy of the Welsh and other regions.

Looking for a day out without travelling too far from home? Look no further than historic Leominster which has plenty to offer. Situated just north of Hereford, it sits on the edge of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire and is easily accessible from either the A44 or A49.

Surrounded by rolling countryside and picture perfect villages, it’s a popular spot for day trippers as well as those living nearby. If you are looking for shops, like many Herefordshire towns, its streets are lined with fabulous independent and specialist shops with everything from antiques and art to gourmet food and fashion. There are also lots of fabulous places to enjoy a meal and drinks, from quaint cafes to pubs and fine dining restaurants, all keen to welcome customers back after a difficult past year.

There are also a plethora of perfect pursuits to be enjoyed in the nearby vicinity. Lace up your walking boots and you will find lots of wonderful tracks to enjoy the finest Herefordshire scenery.

For history lovers there are two nearby National Trust properties, Berrington Hall, located about three miles north of the town and Croft Castle and parkland, just a little west of Berrington, both well worth a visit with both fabulous interiors, gardens and parkland to enjoy.

In the town itself, you will find Leominster Museum on Etnam Street, which tells the story of Leominster and its people from

pre Roman times to the present day. The collection comprises artefacts, pictures, photographs, postcards and documents, including an important collection of paintings and drawings by famous Leominster Victorian artist John Scarlett Davis.

If you want to enjoy the famous local architecture, there’s the famous Black and White Village Trail, a self-guided circular trail of approximately 40 miles long, through the beautiful North Herefordshire countryside.

The trail leaflet starts and finishes in Leominster and takes in medieval villages, other market towns, historic churches and places of interest.

The route is signed throughout with brown and white tourist signs and is a lovely day out by car with tea rooms and pubs along the way.

The trail leaflet is available from Leominster Tourist Information Centre in Corn Square or by emailing tourism@leominstertowncouncil.gov.
