Inside ICI Allied Membership – A New Membership Category by Joseph E. Fritz, Executive Director T

he ICI has a long history of working with organizations that are ineligible for Membership in

the Institute, yet through working with them, we have found their involvement to be beneficial to the ICI and its Members. These organizations include other trade associations, government agencies and for profit companies that are not involved with the investment casting manufacturing process. We believe that there is further

benefit to be had through the establishment of a closer relationship with such companies. For this reason, the ICI Board of Directors approved a new Membership Category at their April 29th meeting called Allied Membership. To be eligible for Allied Membership,

an organization must be ineligible for Membership under any other Membership category as detailed in our By-Laws. Their involvement with the ICI must offer mutual benefit to be inducted as a Member and must continue to be beneficial to maintain their ongoing Membership. For this reason, it is the responsibility of the Executive Director to perform an annual review of its Allied Members to determine whether they are qualified for ongoing Membership.

stainless steel investment castings for the medical industry. Since that time they have expanded to service the Energy, Machine Tool, Food Processing, Chemical and Defense Industries, to name a few.

6 ❘ May 2021 ® Allied Members do not have voting

privileges, may not serve on the Board of Directors, nor are they eligible to chair a committee. However, they may serve as a non-voting member of a committee and may serve the Board of Directors in an advisory capacity should the need exist. In reviewing the By-Laws, it was also determined that University Members are better suited to the Allied category than the Affiliate category, which should be reserved for suppliers. So the By-Laws were further amended to categorize universities as Allied Members, making universities the first Members in this category. There is no fee for participation as

an Allied Member. There is only the requirement that their involvement provides benefit to the ICI and its Members. This type of Membership is nothing

new, as it already exists in a wide variety of associations. One such example is the Observer Membership that the ICI has in CESMII. Their intent is identical to ours, and whether they call it “Observer”, “Allied” or something completely different, the objective is to broaden the benefit offered to an association’s Members.
