This unit will take about two hours to complete. Make sure to do the Module 1 revision on page 25 of the Learner’s Book.
Background information The first satellite images were taken in 1946 by an American space craft. The first satellite images of Earth were also taken by an American space craft, the Explorer VI, in 1959. The famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph of Earth, which is often used in the media, was taken in 1972. In 1977, real-time satellite imagery started being made by the Americans. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) publishes all the satellite images that it takes (by Earth Observatory) and makes them available to the public for free. Visit
