Inclusive teaching
What is inclusive teaching? In the Senior Phase, it is crucial that learners find themselves in an environment where they can develop an interest in learning and the belief that they can learn. Inclusive Education is defined as a learning environment that promotes the full
personal, academic and professional development of all learners irrespective of race, class, gender, disability, religion, culture, sexual preference, learning styles and language. • Inclusion is about acknowledging and respecting: o that all children have the right to learn o that all children can learn o that all learners need support
o that all learners are unique and have different, but equally valued, learning needs
o that all learners need the opportunity to build on their own unique strengths o that the learner is the centre of the teaching and learning process
o that there are differences in learners, e.g. age, gender, language, culture, learning styles, disabilities, HIV status and so on.
• Inclusion is also about:
o enabling educational structures, systems and learning methodologies to meet the needs of all learners
o more than just formal schooling – it embraces learning that occurs in the home, community and so on
o changing attitudes, behaviour, methodologies and environments to meet the needs of all learners
o ensuring maximum participation of all learners in the culture and curriculum of all educational institutions
