Activity 2 Find out about careers to do with electricity Group work Read about the different types of careers to do with electricity. Careers ELECTRICIAN

Electricians work in homes, businesses and factories installing wiring, fuses and other electrical components. They are also involved with the maintenance of the wiring. They may install voice, data and video wiring. An electrician may specialise in maintenance or construction, although many work in both. An electrician who works in construction may become a project manager. They can work for government institutions such as municipalities, or open their own business and become contractors.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Electrical engineers design, develop, test and make electrical equipment. They use electricity to make products that transmit power. They may develop and plan the electrical lighting system for a large building. They may specialise in one of the many products that make or use electricity such as electric motors, microwave ovens, medical instruments or handheld games. Most electrical engineers work in office buildings, laboratories or industrial plants. An electrical engineer needs to be creative, analytical and detail orientated. They must be able to work as part of a team and be able to communicate well.

Electronics engineers work with technologies such as portable music players and global positioning system (GPS). They develop, design, test and supervise the making of electronic equipment. For example, they could devise a radio collar so that researchers can track and study wild animals. Electronics engineers specialise in areas such as communications, signal processing and control systems. They also work in offices, laboratories or industrial plants.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY MAINTENANCE

Duties of someone involved in electricity supply maintenance are operating substations, monitoring the electricity distribution network for faults, maintaining the power line infrastructure and cable jointing to ensure a continuous supply of electricity. Because of a rapid growth in energy demand, there is a need for skilled workers in this area.
