Historical event 1923
The Electricity Supply Commission, or Eskom, was started. Eskom began providing electricity for the country’s railroads and non- mining industries. Eskom bought out the Victoria Falls Power Company and has been the country’s major electricity producer since then.
1984 1996
The Koeberg nuclear power station near Cape Town began producing electricity. It is the only nuclear power station in South Africa.
An experimental wind farm for generating electricity was set up near Darling in the Western Cape.
