Unit 3 Structure of plants and animals: Structure of plants
In this unit you will learn about: • the parts of a plant • some differences between plants.
Basic structure of plants New words
stem – plant part that supports the leaves, fruit and flowers
leaf – green, flat plant part that catches the sunlight
flower – plant part that holds male and female parts
fruit – fleshy plant part that forms from a pollinated flower; it contains the seeds
seed – small plant part from which a new plant will grow
root – underground plant part that anchors the plant in the soil and takes in water
Look at the picture of the plant in Figure 1. It has a typical plant structure with six important parts: • Roots branch underground. They hold the plant firmly in the soil.
• The stem is usually stiff and straight like a rod. It holds the leaves, fruit and flowers.
• The leaves are green and flat. They catch the sunlight. • The flowers are pretty. They hold the male and female parts for reproduction.
• Fruit grows from pollinated flowers. The fruit holds the seeds.
• Seeds are small and dry out. Seeds are new plants in a little package.
