The seven life processes New words

reproducing – process of plants and animals producing their own young or children

excretion – process of getting rid of waste from our bodies

All living things, such as plants and animals, carry out the seven life processes. These processes are: feeding, growing, reproducing, breathing, excreting, sensing and moving.

Feeding

All living things need food. They need food so that they can move, grow and reproduce. Even plants need food.

Reproducing

Living things also make their own young. This process is called reproduction. Reproduction is important so that plants and animals do not die out. The chicken has reproduced and now has chicks.

Excreting

All living things have to get rid of waste. We call the process of getting rid of waste excretion. Sweating, urinating and breathing out carbon dioxide are ways of getting rid of waste.

Moving

All living things move. Plants cannot move from place to place, but some plants can move certain parts. The sunflower on page 13 can move its flowers and leaves to face the Sun.

Sensing

All living things can sense, or tell, what is going on around them. Animals use their eyes, ears, nose or sense of touch. Plants can sense sunlight.
