SECTION 3 Planning and assessment

Planning in the Foundation Phase

The following table provides the term breakdown of the number of lessons required for each Content Area. These are crucial to inform the planning process.

The CAPS provides an overview of the content and topics for each subject in the Foundation Phase Grades R–3. The topics and content are implemented in

schools through a further series of detailed plans: • Work Schedules • Lesson Plans • Formal Programmes of Assessment.

All these plans include information on Informal and Formal Assessment and how each should be recorded and reported. There are details about this in the section called Assessment in the Foundation Phase, page 121 of this Teacher’s Guide.

55 Developing a Work Schedule

Work Schedules are drawn up each year to show what will be done in each grade in each term. Work Schedules are derived from the CAPS documents, and are guided by the topics and content specifi ed for each term. They indicate the topics and content, the sequence and pace at which content is to be taught, the timeframe, as well as Formal Assessment. A Programme of Assessment for the year is built into a Work Schedule. On the next page, you will fi nd the Work Schedule for Mathematics in Grade 1. A more detailed Work Schedule is provided at

the beginning of each term. This schedule lists the time allocations and requisite Learner’s Book and
