Learners may still be busy with baseline assessments this week. Core concepts covered By the end of this week learners need to have covered the following core concepts: • Months of the year (March, April) • Count up to 5 in 1s (number patterns) • Count forwards from 0 to 10 using a number line • The relationship between big and small • Number 2.


Introduction


Show learners the months March and April on the calendar. Revise days of the week. Discuss the daily weather chart.


Counting (number range 0–10) and number patterns Revise counting from 1 to 5. Then focus on counting from 6 to 10, then count from 0 to 10.


Introduce a number line. Show learners how to use their fi ngers to jump from number to number. Show learners a group of objects and ask them to estimate how many objects there are. Learners check their estimations by counting the number of objects.


Get learners to estimate and count a number of objects daily, by counting all and counting on numbers from 0 to 5 in 1s.


Mental Maths Get learners to order numbers from 1 to 5.


Concept development: Big and small Teacher-guided activities


Show learners two different sized objects in the classroom. Ask: Which is big? Which is small? Which is bigger/smaller? Ask learners to fi nd a small object. In groups get them to compare sizes. Ask learners to point to a big object. Again, let learners compare their objects. Show learners a picture of a big animal and a small animal. Ask them to draw the small animal and the big animal. Write the words ‘big’ and ‘small’ on the board.
