4 Learners draw a big ball and a small ball in their exercise books. Learners show their partner their drawings, indicating which is the big ball and which is the small ball.
WB p. 7: 2 Learners colour the big 1 red and the small ‘one’ blue.
Support Use fat crayons and big sheets of paper for learners who are struggling to form the numbers and letters. Allow them to fi nger paint with thick paint and work with other mediums.
Extension Do lots of number rhymes and songs (for example, ‘Two little dickie birds sitting on the wall ...’, ‘1–2–3–4–5, Once I caught a fi sh alive ...’, ‘Five little ducks that I once knew ...’).
Vocabulary
more than the same bigger than smaller than two
Concept development: The number 2 Teacher-guided activities
Show learners two objects of the same kind. Ask them to count how many objects there are. Ask learners to pack out 1s using the number cards. Ask them to do the same with 2s. Write ‘two’ on the board. Learners draw the number 2 in the air, and on large sheets of paper. Provide clay and allow learners to model the number 2. Show learners the number name ‘two’. Learners practise writing ‘two’ in the sand, on large sheets of paper and in their exercise books. Using the number cards, ask learners to match the numbers ‘1’ and ‘2’ to the number names ‘one’ and ‘two’. Ensure learners understand that 2 is more than 1. Provide physical objects for learners to compare and see that 2 objects are more than 1 object, and therefore, 2 is more than 1.
Independent activities LB p. 8; WB p. 8
Instructions LB p. 8: 1 Learners count the mice in the fi rst picture. Learners trace over the number 2 with their fi ngers. Read the number name. Learners trace the number name ‘two’ with their fi ngers. Learners write the number name in their exercise books. 2 Learners draw two shapes in their exercise books.
WB p. 8: 1 Learners trace and write over the dotted lines of the number (2) and the number name (two). Learners then write and draw them without the guidelines. This may take a few lessons to accomplish.
Extension Allow learners to draw two objects in their exercise books, and cut out two objects from magazines. Encourage learners to write the number name ‘two’ and number symbol 2 next to their pictures. Provide numerous opportunities for learners to practise writing the numeral and the number name.
Assessment
Observe learners’ counting range, their concept of 2, and their ability to name big and small. There is no formal assessment required for this week.
