The Silver Lining What’s been good? By Nicola Griffiths
Do you remember the era before the global pandemic?
In the scheme of
things, it wasn’t that long ago, but so much has changed that in many re- spects it can seem like a lifetime ago.
Nicola Griffiths,
Whatever the situation in our lives, there are always two ways of looking at
things. There’s the option to focus on the bleak side, which is a natural thing for our brains to do - it’s due to our inbuilt survival techniques needing to watch out for what will get us. Then there’s the flip side, the pos- itive side.
I suspect that many of us will have been
surprised that we’ve seen one or two positives spring forth from the pandemic, sometimes even more than one or two if we spend a bit of time really thinking about it?
I think a lot of people have found an ability to adjust to a different way of living, certainly my clients have, and
that’s something to positively reflect on. For instance, some people have discovered they prefer a quieter life, whilst others quite like the fact they’re not commuting for hours, etc.
COVID-19
Off out? Check in.
If we do take the opportunity to look at the positive, we might find the current period of time has been useful in simply proving that we can adapt, even if we don’t like it! Do we really need to react by doing the ‘same old’ thing day in and day out forever? And, if we can adapt, what else can we change? Now there’s a thought!
Obviously, not everyone will have found positives. But it can seriously pay off to try and find the silver linings of a situation. If we focus on the negative, it stifles our ability to accept change and can frighten us into rigidity and inflexibility.
“It’s not about the situation but the way we deal with it”.
The above is a well-known fact. This is why I start every client session with the question “What’s been good?”. This is regardless of whether they’re coming to see me for insomnia, bereavement or simply to get some extra confidence for a job interview. I even ask a client with a terminal illness this question – and she now understands why I ask it!
Everyone needs to check in to help stop the spread. Use the NHS COVID-19 app.
Let’s take this next step safely.
If we challenge ourselves to look for small things, pos- sibly tiny things, that have been good today, then that immediately starts to help us feel better. We then get a sense of balance and can deal with the not-so-good things around us, and it helps us cope better with the things we have no control over.
So, what’s been good for you today? You might find that over a week or so if you write down three good things a day, that you’ve either done or seen, can make you feel more in control and happier. Worth a go then?
