Glen and Joanne Morehouse I was never a big speed

event person back in the day but I know one thing and that was Glen Morehouse was the one to beat. In the late 1970’s Glen busted onto the Quarter Horse scene and was a dominant competitor in Barrels and Poles.

“I came late to the

horse world”, says Glen. “At 30 I had never ridden a horse, but was asked to take a young friend to her riding lesson one evening in the

Windy for speed events through the summer of ‘76 while continuing to compete on Band Mans Lady. That Fall, with the late Gord Mitchell, Jim Swanton, and Don Hopkins, he created the Ontario Barrel Racing Asso- ciation. “As I was Director of Speed Events for the On- tario Quarter Horse Associ- ation at the time, Gord became the first president”. Glen and Joanne

Morehouse competed exten- sively on Windjamer in 1977 and 1978, qualifying for the ‘78 World Show in Oklahoma City, where they placed 3rd in Pole Bending. They won Senior Pole Bending at Congress earlier that year. ( Photo 1 - Photo credit: The Rider. From Bayview Park, 1977; 42- horse QH barrel race; points accumulated this day gave Windjamer Superior Barrels and Superior Pole Bending certification.) Glen joined the man-

early ‘70s. Her instructor, John Coulter, had saddled an extra horse for a no-show and offered it to me, and a lesson, for free. That was the most expensive “free” any- thing that I’ve ever re-

agement of Quarterama in 1979 as Marketing Director. This led to W.F. Young’s sponsorship of the Absor- bine Barrel Race series (photo 4) and the Sterivet and Buckleys Futurities. Joanne and Glen were

married in 1980. Their wed- ding present from her par- ents was a Top Moon daughter, Miss Irish L a n c e r , who

events for a few years at their local club, Boots and Saddles, Glen bid on Wind- jamer at the Quarterama Horse Sale in 1976. “He went too high for my budget at the sale, but I was able to make a purchase agreement with Aussie and Alan Watt a week or so after the show”. Glen then trained

rity, then open horse,

winning the Empire State Futurity in 1985. He and Joanne were the only Cana- dian team entered out of 54. Wind Lancer won or placed at many futurites that year. Joanne and Wind

Lancer went on to win the OBRA championship in 1986, plus Rodeo year-end buckles ‘85 and ‘86. (Photo 7- see page 12)

Do you have a special occasion In 1992, with John

Alden, Glen drove to Al- berta to collect three Wind- jamer yearlings. Windjamer was standing stud in that province at the time. Two of those babies would become very important competitors in Ontario speed events. At Quarterama ‘94,

Joanne and Superjamer won the Amateur Barrels and placed 4th in the Absorbine Finals, collecting nearly $1,000.00. (photo 8 - see page 12) Superjamer then went to Alberta with Clau- dine Seguin, where the pair were College Barrel Racing and Pole Bending champs for four years. Glen gave a Clinic at

the Alberta-Saskatchean Agricultural College in 1998. A few of the girls were training for the Stam- pede; most were students at the ag college. In 200 Glen was diag-

nosed with a pituitary tu- mour. “We moved to Uxbridge, close to hospital services and out of serious horse competition”. They soon moved back to the country and had a couple of horses boarded. (Photo 9 on page 12) The question was

“Where are they now? An- swer: Living on a country road near Orillia, with no farm or horses. Glen raced sports cars

in the mid 70s, before horses. Around 2007 he took up kart racing, retiring when he turned 70. Cycling has been a big

part of their outdoor activi- ties for the past 15 years. “In this photo, we’re heading for Coldwater from Orillia”. (Photo 10 on page 12) Boat- ing also interested them for a while.(See photo 13 on

are several government forests. We hike through them every day with our Cairn Terrier, Lola”. Their present home is

on the west shore of Lake Couchiching, so water ac- tivities are high on their list. “I do a bit of fishing; we both kayak a lot; Joanne loves her paddle board”. Glen spent a fair

amount of time wrenching on this 1980 MGB, which he then drove in summers for 5 years. Around 2012,

they

were introduced to pickle- ball when in Florida visiting John and Kathy Alden. This is now their main sport and a daily activity. (See photo 12 on page 12)
