APRIL 2021 THE RIDER /53 Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award

Wellington, Florida – Jessica Springsteen of the United States won the Martha Jolicoeur Lead- ing Lady Rider Award on Satur- day, March 27, 2021, during week 11 of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.

Springsteen was the female

competitor who accumulated the highest number of points follow- ing a clear round in Thursday’s $137,000 Adequan® WEF Chal- lenge Cup Round 11 and a fifth- place finish in Saturday’s $500,000 CSI5* Rolex Grand Prix. In both classes, Springsteen was riding Don Juan van de Donkhoeve, a 12-year-old Bel- gian Sport Horse stallion (Ba- mako de Muze x Heartbreaker) owned by Stone Hill Farm. In Saturday’s $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix, Springsteen was the only female athlete to qualify for the eight-horse jump-off. “I think it’s amazing that

Martha offers this award,” said Springsteen, 29, of Los Angeles, CA. “It’s one of the only sports where men and women compete against each other and I think that’s what makes it so unique and such a special sport. To have

this award means a lot to us. “This is such a special

award,” continued Springsteen. “My horse jumped beautifully all weekend, so to win Leading Lady at the end is icing on top of the cake.” A sponsor and dedicated sup- porter of horse sport at WEF, the 2021 season marks Jolicoeur’s 11th year presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. She began presenting the award in 2010 as a way of recognizing female ac- complishments in an Olympic sport where men and women compete as equals. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur en- joyed a successful international show jumping career before be- coming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate bro- ker.

The Martha Jolicoeur

Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow real- tor and horseman Dale Lawler, is presented weekly to the high- score female rider based on per- formances in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup and grand prix events. The directors of the All England

Jumping Course, Hickstead have made the difficult decision to cancel the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting for 2021, due to the ongoing Covid-19 sit- uation. The international fixture will be re-

placed by a national show, the Al Shi- ra’aa Jumping Championships, to run on the same dates (23-27 June). While there will be no international showjumping, there will be a range of jumping classes from British Novice to Grand Prix level as well as the usual showing and car- riage driving classes that form part of the June fixture. The Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby

Meeting is one of the most iconic showjumping events in the international calendar, culminating in the Al Shira’aa Derby – a class that was first held in 1961. Normally around 40,000 people attend across the five days of the show. The meeting was cancelled in

2020, which was the first time the class had not run since its inception. The de- cision to miss a second year has been a very disappointing one, but despite the encouraging Government announce- ments and rollout of the vaccine, the sit- uation still remains fragile and unpredictable at this time.

The replacement event, the Al Shi-

ra’aa Jumping Championships, will see seven rings of competition run through- out the show, including the Longines In- ternational Arena. The highlights will be the Al Shira’aa Trophy, a 1.40m Grand Prix with a £15,000 prize fund, as well as the Al Shira’aa age championships. There will be a number of HOYS qual- ifying showing classes, plus the final of the RoR/Tattersalls Show Horse series. Hickstead Director Lizzie Bunn

commented: “This has been a very tough decision, but the Derby is more than just a showjumping competition, it is an occasion where a full and enthusi- astic crowd plays its part. With the un- certainty over permitted attendance, as well as other restrictions that we face, we are concentrating all our efforts on running a major five-day national show instead. We would like to thank Al Shi- ra’aa and all our stakeholders for their continued support during this challeng- ing time.” The plan is to run the event with

limited public attendance, along with a boutique selection of tradestands, but full details will be confirmed nearer the time.

Competitor entries will open in April at www.hickstead.co.uk.
