The University of Guelph’s Equine


Studies Online program – offered in partnership through Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd) and Equine Guelph – provides students with relevant and up to date information for a well-rounded equine education. Not only are students taught by current in- dustry professionals, they also have the unique opportunity to engage with and learn from a wide range of guest speak- ers.


“We bring in instructors and guest


speakers from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, expertise, and even from other countries,” says Gayle Ecker, di- rector of Equine Guelph. “This makes for a fascinating look at the ‘big picture’ as we focus on the industry perspective in our courses.” As new information and research


becomes relevant to horse owners and the equine sector, Equine Guelph con- tinues to update and adapt course mate- rial to reflect the growing industry. The guest speakers play an important role in helping students build an educational foundation, gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, and expand their perspectives to continue learning. “A guest speaker might be a


prominent researcher talking about building pathways to better treatment for a horse, or an industry professional giving us the perspective of welfare challenges in their own country or in a specific sector of the industry,” says Ecker. “Our guest speakers bring spe- cific knowledge and experience to their courses, which provides a rare opportu- nity for students to interact with equine experts of this calibre.” As the industry grows, so too does


the amount of research made available to the public; but not all of that infor- mation is dependable. In the equine pro- gram, students will learn how to critically assess information and filter out the most reliable, accurate, and sci- ence-based research. Proper knowledge and care for the horse is one of the greatest takeaways from the program. Although courses are completely


online, students in the equine program are still able to engage with each other, learn from each other, and create a com- munity with shared learning goals. “Through a supportive learning


community and based on a foundation of equine welfare and evidence-based knowledge, this program can help all students regardless of their experience,” notes Ecker. “There is something for everyone, with introductory courses for beginners to advanced courses for those with prior knowledge. The online learn- ing environment is an added bonus for busy horse owners who can access the course on their own time.” About Gayle Ecker Gayle’s love of horses began at a


very early age. Before she could even walk, she started riding on a horse named Princess and at just six years old she received her very own pony named Pogo. Ecker was highly involved with Arabians for horse shows and breeding, and after seven years as a vet assistant was ready to expand her knowledge into academia. Her appreciation for science, concern for animal welfare, and belief that accessible education can help cre- ate a culture of caring are all factors that led her to where she is today.
