concerning COVID!! Vaccinations are rolling out !!!!!! Also we are pleased to pass along to our members the information that was sent to us concerning the ONTARIO EQUINE HARDSHIP PROGRAM
This was launched on January 18, 2020.
This is designed for Ontario Individual busi- nesses offering horse-related experiences up to $2500.00 per horse involved in these serv- ices to a maximum of $20,000.00 per busi- ness in financial support. The funding is to help cover direct costs
for feed, water, veterinary care (excluding eu- thanasia) and farrier services needed to main- tain these horses. These experiences include riding les-
sons, equine-based therapy, trail riders, sum- mer riding camps and horse drawn carriage or sleigh
riders.Businesses will be eligible for funding if they earned over 50 percent of
their revenue in 2019 from providing eligible services, their 2020 revenue was less than half of what was earned in 2019 due to the pandemic and the attest they are facing hardship as a result of covid which will make it hard to care for their horses. More information can be obtained from
contacting Agricultural Information Contact Centre (AICC) 1-877-424-1300 or email

YOUR LIST OF QUESTIONS YOU
NEED TO HAVE ANSWERED BEFORE BUYING A HORSE.
• What Breed and Gender? Stallion, Mare, Gelded? • Is it a registered horse? • How old is it? • What vaccines has it had and when? • When was the last time it saw a vet for well- ness check and teeth examinations or floating? • Does it have any allergies or hoof issues, di- gestive issues? • How often does a Farrier trim the hooves? • Does the horse wear shoes and why? • How well does it stand for Vet Checks and Farrier and Tacking? • What did they use the horse for? Roping,
the Rider:
Trail Riding, Lessons, • Team Penning, Hunter Jumper, etc? • Has it won any ribbons and for what? • Who rode the horse, an experienced rider, beginner rider, etc? • Why are they selling the horse? • Do they offer a 30 day return policy if the horse is not suitable? • You want to see the horse be tacked and rid- den by the owner. • You may want to ride the horse yourself. • Does the horse trailer load easily? • Does the horse become anxious or frantic if separated from the herd or its mates? • Is the horse stall kept or free range? • What type of bit or bitless did they use? • What type of feed does the horse get and how often? • Always remember a horse behaves differ- ently away from the home it knows !! It can take a few months for the horse to settle in es- pecially if it goes from a herd environment to being alone. • Patience and kindness always prevail!!!! • Some sellers provide videos of the horse. I often refer to buying a horse is like
buying a used car. Looks great, runs great for a week then all the hidden issues start popping up.
Know what you want to do with the
horse before you go shopping. Not all horses are suited to all disciplines. Remember you have to be able to get on
this horse from the ground if out where there are no mounting blocks. If you are 5’ and buy a 17 hand horse for trail riding could be a problem. Yes there are stirrup extenders but many have trouble making them work. If you are unsure, seek professional
help!! The fee could be well worth it in the end. Happy Horse Happy Owner/Rider!!!!!!!!
