Festivals & Regattas 65

Dartmouth Regatta: 21st-28th August Dartmouth’s Royal Regatta is the biggest of the town’s many events. It’s been running for 175 years and only cancelled last year for the 11th time in its history due to the COVID pandemic. 2021 may see a different event, depending on the outcome of the Department for Culture Media & Sport’s large event testing. The organisers hope the green light will be given for a normal Regatta so the local community and visitors alike, can enjoy the rowing races (the locals train all year for their rowing races!), sailing, fireworks, Flyboarding displays, crabbing and fancy dress competitions, to mention just a few highlights. There’s a great buzz during the week with music in the Royal Avenue Gardens and a street market taking over much of the town’s embankment. The organisers are proud that HM Royal Marine Band always perform at the official Opening Ceremony, which takes place on Wednesday 25th August, and that they receive

such tremendous support from Britannia Royal Naval College and her cadets. The whole event is steeped in history since Queen Victoria bestowed the Royal title upon it after a visit to Dartmouth. The whole family can get involved with a varied range of activities and competitions. Spot the Oddity is a much- loved favourite with children spending hours looking in shop windows to ‘spot the oddity’. Whether it’s finding a tin of baked beans in an art gallery or spotting a carefully hidden wooden spoon on

display in a clothes shop - this game is somehow deeply satisfying whatever your age! There’s also a staged arena on Coronation Park where the now famous Sundowner and Proms in the Park take place. After the sunset awards ceremony on the Saturday night, everything culminates in a dramatic fireworks display. Fingers crossed that restrictions will have eased sufficiently for you all to enjoy!
