TRAVE L VINE YARD VACAT IONS

T R AV E L RAI S E A GLAS S

Enjoying the local food and wine whilst on holiday is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Sampling and enjoying new flavours is all part of the travel experience and how over time we have extended our culinary repertoires and knowledge. For wine lovers, learning more about the wine making process only adds to the enjoying of drinking it so why not plan a vineyard vacation to fully immerse yourself in viticulture. This month we take a look at a selection of vineyard locations offering accommodation.

70 TUSCANY AUTHENTIC ITALIAN EXPERIENCE

The family owned Castello di Vicarello is home to six hectares of organic, high density vineyards producing four varieties, where guests can totally immerse themselves in the wine experience, from grape to bottle.

Located in the heart of the stunning Tuscan countryside, with far reaching views towards the Maremma coast, Castello di Vicarello is a family-owned 12th century castle, owned by the Baccheschi Berti family. With 40 hectares of private land consisting of vineyards, olive groves, farmland and forests, Castello di Vicarello offers total privacy, peace and tranquillity, and is perfect for those seeking a relaxing holiday in exceptional natural surroundings, with Italian authenticity at its heart.

Blessed with fertile soil owing to the close proximity of the sea, the Castello di Vicarello vineyard is protected by Monte Amiata to the southeast providing protection from strong winds, whilst the dense forests and Ombrone river below the estate create the perfect conditions for the ancient soil, rich in clay minerals, marine deposits and calcium, to cultivate and help create the best possible Tuscan wines.

Wine tasting takes place in the magical atmosphere of the castle’s courtyard or in the middle of the vineyards, making for a truly memorable experience. Guests visiting in September can also learn about the grape harvest as it is taking place.

Castello di Vicarello is home to nine beautifully designed suites, two outdoor swimming pools, olive oil production and an open kitchen for Italian dining. The property is able to arrange an array of experiences, both on and off the estate, for guests to immerse themselves in the destination. Those feeling energetic can hike or cycle the trails that surround the castle or visit some of the charming villages and towns of Tuscany, while the historic city of Siena is just an hours’ drive and the Tuscan coast can be easily reached for a day spent by the sea.

Rates start from €515 (currently approx. £466) based on two sharing on a B&B basis. Wine tasting, for two people, is priced at €85 (currently approx. £73) per person or for small groups of three to five people, it is €75 (currently approx. £65) per person
