News Leeds footpath

‘ght goes on’ LEEDS Parish Council is to press ahead with plans of getting a pub- lic right of way through woods near the playing fields.

Eight-foot metal fence panels

have been erected, preventing walkers using the woodland, and CCTV cameras have been fitted near the old entrance.

The parish council had not re-

ceived word from the owners so would “instigate the process of get- ting a public right of way”. One resident at Farmer Close said: “Apart from being ugly fences, they are incredibly un- friendly.

“One can only assume that the owners have no intention of being friendly neighbours, which is a shame, because this is a friendly and neighbourly community.”

Explore faith

THE North Downs Churches have launched 10-week Alpha Online, a “chance to explore life and Chris- tian faith” on February 25. To find out more contact Rev Mark Pavey at revpavey@gmail.com.

Yalding WI member Dee-Ann Stead

HOPES are high that a Women’s Institute branch forced to close after 77 years can be revived. Yalding WI shut down after its executive committee had to stand aside for personal reasons. And without a president, secre-

tary or treasurer the rules state the group had to disband – a twist made more inconvenient by the COVID-19 crisis. But now Yalding Taxis boss Dee-Ann Stead (42) is spearhead- ing the campaign to reinstate those positions to get the WI back up and running when lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Mother-of-three Mrs Stead, of

Kenward Road, said: “The old ex- ecutive committee couldn’t carry on due to personal reasons, and the rules are that without an exec- utive committee, there can’t actu- ally be a WI. It would have been such a shame to see it go. “It was more of an administra-

tive failure than anything else. We have 40 members but no one wanted to commit to the roles.” Two volunteers have now come

forward for the posts of treasurer and secretary. President of Leeds WI, Louise Menenes-Bautista (pic- tured below), said: “I really hope that Yalding gets back up and running soon. To

have 40

members is very healthy for what is a rural group. “The WI in

our village has increased its mem- bership from a low of eight to around 20 and there were another four about to join at the point that the Coronavirus happened last year.

“I am rather hoping that the pandemic will spur people into getting involved in community activities such as the WI.”
