Chamber welcomes Matthew Stephens as President Elect
W
e are delighted to announce Matthew Stephens has been appointed President Elect. Matthew has been the Development Director at Barnsley-based Brook Group since 2003.
Since arriving from his native Swansea, South Wales to Yorkshire in
1992, in order to study at University in Hull and setting up home in Sheffield in 2006, Matthew has gained an enviable track record within the regional and national property industry. Matthew has played a key role in one of the region’s largest private
sector regeneration projects at Gateway Plaza in Barnsley, working from site acquisition through to site completion and the delivery of one of the flagship developments within the Remaking Barnsley initiative as well as residential, commercial and leisure developments across South Yorkshire. Notably, Matthew also led the development of the former NUM Headquarters in Sheffield City Centre which had laid empty for 30 years, creating new office and leisure space in a prime location. He joined The Brook Group from a Dublin- based development company, dealing heavily in the residential sector, purchasing schemes for investment, and also selling developments to the investor markets within the UK and Europe. Matthew has a strong network of
contacts within both the property and local and national government sectors, has gained a strong understanding of the support that our chamber members need during these challenging times and has the ability to mentor and work with business to facilitate growth and support opportunities through those networks. Matthew first engaged with the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber in
November 2007 by joining our Representation Council, the Chamber’s unified voice of local businesses. From this stepping stone, he was elected onto the Chamber’s board of Directors in 2014 and has helped steer the company into the successful organisation it is today. Matthew also represents the Chamber of Commerce on a
number of key strategic boards including the Barnsley Inclusive Economy Board, Principal Towns Board run by Barnsley Council in addition to the Goldthorpe Towns Board, utilising his significant experience in placemaking and regeneration. Commenting on his appointment, Matthew said: “I’m
incredibly privileged to be put forward as President Elect of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. The last year has been very difficult, but it is outstandingly positive in how the Chamber has responded with adapting and supporting its members. “The Chamber’s, and its current President Joada’s
response to the pandemic, has been exceptional. I shall look forward to continuing the hard work and working alongside you all.”
